how to connect to internet without admin. privilege

Asked by Peter

Hi. I am new to Ubuntu Linux but am impressed with it. Thanks to the developers.
How can I allow users to connect to the internet without giving them admin. privilege?
We often have visitors who want to check their emails but I dont want them to have admin. privilege.
Thanks

Hello !

In fact, the easiest way is to locate in your /etc/group the group related to internet access (name should be quite explicit) and add users who might access the internet into this group (you'll need admin privileges while editing the file).

Hope this helps !

Benoît

Hi Benoit,
I installed Ubuntu 6.06 from the CD's they post out. I thought I had better download all the updates before getting back to you in case they fixed the problem. Unfortunately they did not.

There is no /etc/group folder. In the user privilege section I have given "Use tools that establish dial up connection" permission and all other permissions there except. It still requires "system admin tasks" for a user to connect. I have the telephone Icon on the panel for users to click on. I should have mentioned the version of Ubuntu in my original question.
I hope this helps.
Thanks
Peter

Hello !

In fact, /etc/group is a plain text file, not a folder, and I'm quite positive that you have one as it's a standard ;) ...

Could you please check if you find it ?

Thanks and regards,
Benoît

Hi Benoit,
Thanks for your quick reply. There are plenty of files in the /etc
folder but "group" is not there as a file or subfolder.

Peter

Sorry about my last reply. That file does exist and all users are already listed in it.

What problem are guest users experiencing ?
Normally the configuration of the network only needs to be done once, and any guest users will be able to use it without needing admin privs.

Dear Alan,
Yes it does not need reconfiguring. When a user wants to connect from the telephone icon on the panel it asks for their admin password. Without admin privilege it refuses connection. A user with admin privilege has no problem.
Thanks
Peter

Peter,

as I understand you connect to the Internet with a modem, is that correct?

Go to the user management application:

System->Administration->Users and Groups

There you select the user account you want to give the Internet access to. Then select 'Properties' and select the 'User Priviledges' tab.

Make sure that the line 'Connect to Internet using a modem' and probably also 'use modems' is checked.

Do this with every user account you want this Internet access to have.

I hope this helps.

Yes I am connected with a 56K external modem.
In "System->Administration->Users and Groups" 'User Priviledges'
The wording "Connect to Internet using a modem" is not in version 6.06
There is a line :Use tools that establish dial up connection" as there and I have ticked that.
Thanks
Peter

In "System->Administration->Users and Groups" 'User Priviledges'

"Use tools that establish dial up connection" has always been ticked. The problem is not solved.

I have installed firestarter which causes dial up at startup so people without admin. priv. are connected automattically.
