Hardware compatibility

Asked by marbuntu

HI Everyone:

I am running a Dell Inspiron 1525 with vista home basic(which I absolutely hate) laptop and I am not sure if my network card and wireless capabilities will be supported for my internet connection in Ubuntu 8.04. Below are my specs for my computer. Does anyone see any kind compatibility problems? I am using a DSL modem/router that is provided by AT&T that I use to connect wirelessly with. Thank you.

Dell Inspiron 15" laptop running windows Vista home basic 32 bit operating system

Intel core 2 duo T720 @2.00GHz

3.00 GB RAM

Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family

Optiarc DVD+-RS AD 5560A ATA Device

Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini Card

Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

Sometimes it is difficult to determine if certain hardware will be suppported. Many times the supported hardware list is not current and update. Since their is a new ubuntu release every six months, sometime the list you are looking at is for a previous ubuntu release or hasn´t been tested with new hardware.

That being said your ethernet card is definitely supported

Your wireless card might not work out of the box with Hardy 8.04, but certainly can be made to work with ndiswrapper. You can search ubuntu forums if you need to tweak your wireless.

The new release of Intrepid is supposed to have much better wireless support and the final version should be coming out at the end of the month.

Before installing any Ubuntu distribution, you can always boot to the LiveCD without making any changes to you computer. This will allow you test all your hardware to make sure that it is compatible before you decide to install

Hope this helps
