Instaling 8.04 LTS, network card not working

Asked by Dale Maris

Attemping to setup a HP Pavilion and network card does not seem to work. I originally had a 3Com 3C9008-TPO card. I now switched that card for a LinksysLNE100TX 10/100 card. Neither seem to make a connection. I have a switch connect to my router that other machines are connected to. I believe that the Linksys card is the same I have in another desktop working, (Need to verify). The network icon at the top states 'Manual network configuration' when I mouse over it.

When issuing an ifconfig command, for eth0 I do not get either a inet addr: or an inet6 addr:
eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr: 00:a0:cc:32:42:86
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric: 1
RX packeets: 0 errors: 0 droped: 0 overrunt: 0 frame: 0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0 collisions: 0 txqueueler: 1000
Rx Bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX Bytes: ) (0.0 B)
Base address: 0x3000

lspci:
01:0d:0 Ethernet controller: Lite-On communication Inc LNE100TX (Linksys EtherFast 10/100)

The card seems to be recognized, but not configured. I attempted to manually configure it, but did not get it working.

I eventually want to use a Netgear USB wireless adapter (WG111). I figured that I may need to instal some packages first.

Where can I find the documentation or instructions to resolved this?

Hi,

Please try the suggestion here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=527266&highlight=LNE100TX

So reboot your router, connect your LNE100TX card directly to a different port on the router, using - if possible - a different network cable.

During this test, please avoid using the switch and make sure only the problematic network card is connected to the router (no other PC's should be connected)

Then reboot your pc and try to get an IP address.

I know this sounds a little silly, but I think strange problems require strange solutions/methods sometimes. ;-)

Regards,

Mark

Mark, Thanks for your suggestion, I will try this. I am out of town and
will not be back until next week, so give me some time. I seem to
almost have the wireless connection going. I am not sure, but suddenly
it found my wireless router and connected. Even though it is just
across the room I seem to have a very slow connection and I could not
actually get to the Internet.

I have been running Ubuntu for some time, but I am still very new at the
Administration side. I need to get better on all of the commands. I
used to be a DBA for mainframes, so I know that I can master it. I am
setting up a new machine for a friend. I do like Ubuntu and Linex over
Windows. I have really gotten off of Windows. Thanks for your help and
I will try it when I return home.

I have walked through the the suggested steps per Mark Rijckenberg which has not resolved my problem. Here is what I did and the results.

1. I connected directly to my router.

2. I did not have another Ethernet cable, but I attached my laptop running Ubuntu and it connected with the same cable and the same port on my router without any problems. So I assume the cable and router port is not my issue.

3. I then rebot, but I still get no connection to my router.

4. I did an lcpci command, and it seems the system does recognized my network card. See below:

family1@family1:~$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82810 GMCH (Graphics Memory Controller Hub) (rev 03)
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82810 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801AB PCI Bridge (rev 02)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801AB ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 02)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801AB IDE Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801AB USB Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801AB SMBus Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801AB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
01:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Lite-On Communications Inc LNE100TX [Linksys EtherFast 10/100] (rev 25)
family1@family1:~$

4. I also attempted to revise the attributes for the wired network from 'Enable Roming Mode' to DHCP mode. I also put in my router IP address and attempted to set a fixed IP address. None of this worked. I have also put the DNS server (192.168.1.1) and my Search Domain (myhome.westell.com) and none of this has helped my problem.

Any suggestions where I go from here? Can I have some issues with my install, like incorrect copy of some internal file?

Thanks Dale Maris <email address hidden>

I performed a ifconfig command and I noticed that I do not have an eth0 reference at all. My Ethernet Card must not be configured. Here is the results of my ifconfig command:

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:67100 (65.5 KB) TX bytes:67100 (65.5 KB)

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Where can I get the information to configure a network card? Dale

Hi Dale,

What you can also try, is move the LNE100TX network card to a different PCI socket in your PC. Also make sure the "plug & play OS" option is disabled in the BIOS.

Then try the 9 commands above.

If it still does not work, move the card to a third PCI socket and try again.

If that does not work, I am unfortunately out of suggestions :-/

Mark

Hi Dale,

Try the suggestion from gfowler on this URL:

http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=677007

Edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and comment out the line that has NAME="eth0" in it

Also edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and make sure it contains the following:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

After editing these 2 files, reboot your pc and enter the following commands:

sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient eth0

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Mark

Mark, I followed your directions as above and I received an error no device eth0 for the ifconfig eth0 up command. I have not moved the Ethernet card to other PCI slots at this time. I will do that now. I wanted to attach the two control files to this message. Is there a way? I will paste them in for now. Many thanks. Regards Dale

I have now moved the Ethernet card to all three PCI slots and it did not seem to change my results. It still does not seem that the card is recogonized as eth0 or eth1. The command lspci, does show the card, but the networking does not seem to recogonized the card. Thanks, Dale

The only solution I can find is to use another distribution on Linux. Fedora seems to work fine, so I guess I will be switching distributions. If there is any updates I would appreciate any information. Dale

I found the solution. The HP Pavilion has an option when setting up the hardware that had OS=windows. I switched this to OS=Other and everything works great. It seems that it set up the modem for windows before the boot and therefore there is a conflict with this device. I appreciate everyones help and hope this information may help others with HP computers.
