Cannot install ubuntu 6.10, installation hangs

Asked by hooj

Hello,

I would consider myself knowledgeable about computers in general, but I don't know very much about linux. I've got an old PC that I wanted to install Linux onto so that I could tinker around with it and get comfortable with it. That being said, I cannot get ubuntu 6.10 to install.

The computer is:
Celeron 1ghz
384mb RAM
6gb HDD
64mb geforce400mx PCI

Not a screaming computer by any means, but I figured it could get the job done. Anyways, no matter what I do, the installation goes to a point and it then displays a black screen and stops. I've tried changing the boot options to turn apic off and I also tried the framebuffer options in the troubleshooting page. It still hangs. The only thing I can say that might help is that I turned the quiet option off and tried to find out what it was loading before it would go to the all-black screen. The last two entries were:

Starting GNOME display manager
Starting UNIX printing system:closed (I think this is correct, it flashes by very quickly)

Then it jumps to a black screen and does nothing.

Any ideas/suggestions?

I am sorry if this is redundant in any way... I swear I'm a good person and tried to do everything I could find here before restoring to asking this question

Hi,

Are you able to get into the LiveCD mode and start the installation?

From what I read on your support ticket, I have the idea you are able to start the installation. However, the part where you mention changes on the boot options got me thinking otherwise.

right, sorry, I choose the first option in the CD's menu after changing the boot options and it begins to load a bunch of things and gets stuck after those two things,

Starting GNOME display manager
Starting UNIX printing system:closed

just goes to a black screen with nothing

ok, so I went and downloaded the alternate iso, and I installed it via text option. It went through the entire installation, and spit the CD out and asked me to restart it. I did so, and it came up with the ubuntu logo, and once the progress bar filled up, the entire screen went black, like my problem previously.

I'm really pretty sure it's a problem of graphical nature, but not knowing much about linux, I can't figure it out. I'm wondering if it's issues with my video card (it's PCI) and that the computer has onboard video as well.

Hi hooj,

In order to get GUI so you can proceed with the installation, you will need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

When you get an all black screen, do the following:

Press CTRL+ALT+F1, to get you text mode:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Locate the [Device] section and add this line to the bottom of it:

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,Auto"

You're done editing. Press CTRL+O to save changes (with nano) or ESC and :wq if you're using vi

Press CTRL+ALT+F7 to get back to the GUI mode followed by CTRL+ALT+BackSpace to restart the X server.

Hi,

I noticed you submitted a bug (#105987) about this.

Sorry to ask, but, have you tried what I mentioned?

I just re-read your posts and I noticed you have two graphics card. Have you disabled the onboard graphics card on the BIOS?

Yeah, I tried your solution, it did not work, hehe. The problem was that I had to choose in the bios one or the other, onboard or PCI. I could do everything with the onboard - install, configure, run. However it was very slow graphically. Yet, when I switched to my PCI card, I could install, but once it installed, it would load to where the login screen should be there, but instead, the screen would go completely black. I talked to a friend about it, and he said it was probably the fact that I needed to setup the driver for the pci card in the xserver configuration, and he told me to play around with the dpkg-reconfigure-xserver-xorg command. I used lspci to find the address of the PCI slot the graphics card was in, and played with the configuration menu until I got it to work. Now it works perfectly fine, and it uses the PCI card.

Thank you for your efforts, I definitely appreciate it.
