boot seems to pause after grub

Asked by Daniel Hollocher

after the option to view the grub menu counts down, and is skipped, the boot process goes to the next screen of "Starting up ..." and just sits there. For a very long time.

(As a side note, I did not have this problem with gutsy, only hardy. When I saw the computer just sit at that screen, I figured that hardy just didnt work, since its an older machine. So, I left it at that screen, went and burned a gutsy disk at a different computer, and by the time I got back, it had booted!)

Eventually, it goes on to the normal boot process, and gets through it, slowly, but orders of magnitude faster than that first screen. Each step takes only a second or 2, rather than like 5 minutes for the first screen.

Any advice/help?

PS - Here is a paste from dmesg

It seems like this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/159819

Can you try to upgrade your system to new 8.10 Ubuntu intrepid release...

Upgrade from hardy to intrepid

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo sed -i "s/hardy/intrepid/g" /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

sudo apt-get clean all
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then to check your new ubuntu version:

lsb_release -a

Hope this helps

I just want to confirm what I suspected dmesg was telling me. The boot time is literally 10 minutes at that step.
I'm hesitant to upgrade to intrepid at this time. I am currently testing intrepid on my personal, and much more modern machine, and the latest kernel update broke my networking. I'll try that, but once networking on my main machine is fixed.

Here is the requested cpuinfo. I'm very curious what it tells you!

family@family-desktop:~$ sudo cat /proc/cpuinfo

interesting that lshw is not found. I'm running xubuntu on this machine, btw. If you were curious about my other machine's problems with intrepid, I've posted the same info here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/269711

ok, so you guys are going after my network card, which I doubt is the trouble here. Something tells me that you may be out of ideas, so I might as well give intrepid a go. Worse comes to worse, I'll burn a gutsy cd, and reinstall this geezer. I have no needed settings or info on this computer.

FYI: sudo apt-get clean === sudo apt-get clean all or whatever else you would like to put after

well, the upgrade to intrepid fixed it.

Thanks!
