There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Asked by 20after4

After booting the 7.04 beta install/live cd on an IBM Thinkpad a21m I am presented with an error dialog box containing this message:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Otherwise the beta looks really nice, good work everyone!

So far everything else seems to be in order and functioning as it should. I will report further problems if there are any.

 Hi Jade.

I'm not sure what could be causing your sound problem. I did found a couple of links that might be helpful:

Hi,

I had the same issue where I got GNOME error and installation was hanging at random point (24%, 51%, 73%).

After a bit of head scratching I pulled out all device I do not currently need for installation (internal modem, sound card, second ethernet card)
and installation went smoothly (I got GNOME error again, though)

Hope that helps.

It happends to me too. I've noticed that it ONLY happends when my connection to internet is off.

The reason off my problem:
My father uses to run eMule (he uses Windows) and Azureus, so the router without QoS refuse my connection.

Solution:
Start your PC when the router is working fine.

For you who may not need an internet conection, I quess you should uninstall SOME networking capabilities or at least, disable them on start.

I too am getting this same error message. Then I get a blank tan screen. My CD-ROM is hummin' so it must be trying to load something. Also I'm attempting to load my Ubuntu into a VMware Virtual machine Server version 1.0.3. Please help. What do I need to do... Not quite ready to leap off of XP- hence the VMware.

I've got the same thing. Error message is the same, and my D drive is working like mad but nothing is even happening. I started the install with my wireless connection off, after reading some of these forums I turned it on, but still no difference. Should I reinstall? How do I even stop the current install? I don't want to screw up my computer but I'm at a standstill.

I'm stuck too. I'm having too too many problems to set up ubuntu. Really. Firstly this GNOME failure, secondly installation freezing at 80%. Everything is okay with the machine. I formatted the disc and got windows SP2 working perfectly well. It installed all my drivers correctly, no display problems.

I am still struggling to get ubuntu accept my intel 865G chipset.

Why so many problems? I once used Vector Linux (KDE) and loved it. No hogs, its fast and easy to use. Its not that, because Vector Linux does not have Canonical providing Free CDs that Ubuntu is the best linux around. Is it a weird marketing strategy? Vector is more stable. My sincere opinon. Really.

Well, until someone finds out how to solve the problem, ill struggle around and get it working.

I had 7.0.4 dual booting with XP for about 3 weeks. Moved the hard drive to another computer and now the 7.0.4 wont start. Windows is OK.
The oringinal 7.0.4 CD won't load. When it completes load I am left with a frozen cursor and the above original error message. It also mentions possible reasons.
Message bus security blocked a reply
Reply timeout expired.
Network connection broken.
Remote application did not send a reply.

I tried the Knoppix 5.1.1 CD and that loaded but with the cursor frozen. No error message.

I am a new to Linux user with reasonable Windows experience as a user not very good on the technical side.

Any further info required.

Hi BALDn75,

I havent yet solved the issue. I am running windows xp sp2 right now, and no other OS can work smoothly apart from this from now on. I must precise that the same ubuntu cd, as well as the same ISO image used to work perfectly on the same machine, but not now. Ubuntu 7.04 (as well as any other linux such as Vector linux (tested ok once) , and kubuntu 7.04) wont install as well on VMware. Really weird.

I guess I had a piece of my hardware the root of all these Ubuntu Bugs. It used to freeze when I swapped between LCD and CRT (on the Acer Travelmate 2350 laptop) . Have you done anything of that sort? If yes, I suppose that the chipset may have been damaged.

How far nevertheless, because Windows XP SP2 was installed correctly, and I am using it without problem/no bugs/nothing..

I hope the creators of Ubuntu can solve the problem.

I seem to have solved the problem of the error message.
I realised that some of the peripherals were not correctly installed.
1. The speakers were not plugged in.
2. The CD and DVD reader/writers were not correctly configured re master/slave.
3. I had a PCI card with two USB ports which was installed in the previous tower. I installed them in the new configuration.

Ubuntu now loads without the errror message at the beginning of this page.

Hi BALDn75,

You are so lucky. Really! Its been nearly a week that I'm trying to get Ubuntu working on my machine, but in vain. I have tried almost all previous versions of Ubuntu as well as Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2. They all failed. Linux doesn't work anymore on this machine- It used to before. Its a laptop, and I havent modified any hardware. I'm so perplexed and frustrated. I have done al hardware test possible i have found on the net, and they all report okay. My hard-disk is okay, the dvd rom as well, the memorey, everything is Okay. And besides that, Windows has been installed in 30 minutes and it is working with perfection. No glitches, no bugs, no hangouts, nothing. Windows is working so well, like never before. We say that, when others go wrong that we see the good. Windows has never failed on this machine in fact.

The problem is that I want to run linux on it and why in the remotest ideas, would it not load?? It fails on VMware as well. Installation hands at 83% during "select software" installation.

All current versions of Ubuntu will never load on this machine. I hope that the linux coders out there can do something of my Acer Travelmate 2350.

Thanks.

Hi,

What i did: (its totally absurd, believe me, but hey, it worked..)
step 1: Format ur drive totally with the windows XP formatter in the installer. (boot from it; you may wish to install it totally, download a windows hardware tester, and check if ur machine is working well).
Step 2) Download Gutsy Gibbon T2 , and setup. It shud work (it did for me)
Step 3) Remove Gutsy and now install Feisty Fawn

Its totally strange but this is what I did to get Feisty working.

Good luck.
And report back any eventualities.

It has a simple solution: Add more RAM, you need at least 512 Kb, LiveCD use RAM instead HDD.

Ok, I did th latest set of updates this morning and the problem is back. It was gone with the system running really well. When I log in the Gnome Settings Daemon can not start.

hlima may be right. I have a 256MB Ram module and Ubuntu takes a hell of time to go though the 8 steps of installation, (around 1-2 hours), with intensive use of the cd rom drive.

But, again, this is weird, because all the other liveCDs work. Vector Linux is a quite heavy KDE and yet, I dont have any problem.

Maybe Ubuntu must include the install function right in their boot menu options.

Please do not close this question as all our answers and solutions are just by trial and error; the Ubuntu installation isnt failsafe.

Regards,

Shailen.
