how do I get software centre to work
When I try to go into software centre it only shows me what I have but I cannot get access to importing software?

Alternatively, you could simply install synaptic as an alternative to Ubuntu Software Center using these Terminal commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synaptic
Your choice :-)

Note: At this point terminal refused to accept my password and the whole lot stopped. I closed the terminal and tried again but the terminal would not let me enter my password.

You installed synaptic.
So now you can use synaptic instead of Ubuntu Software Center to install software.
Open Synaptic. It should be in one of the submenu's now....
Concerning the password in the Terminal: the Terminal is accepting your password, but it is NOT showing the password while you are typing it for security reasons.
