sound card does not appear in sound settings

Asked by Ed Redman

I am running ubuntu 16.10 64bit with amd A10 Asus computer.

My sound card "anolog sound card" does not show in play sound through window in Sound settings under output

All that shows is" HDmi Display port 4
gf108 High definition Audio controller" This is my hdmi audio for video playback.

However on
Settings for Line out it shows sliders for Balance left & right. Fade rear and front and Subwoofer minimum maximum
and in mode Analog Surround 5.1 output. The mode can be changed. When I push the Test sound button nothing happens. The good part is I do have sound.

lspci -v lists the following for audio devices

01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
Subsystem: ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd. GF108 High Definition Audio Controller
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
 Memory at fe080000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Capabilities: <access denied>
 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
 Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

and
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. FCH Azalia Controller
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16
 Memory at fe300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
 Capabilities: <access denied>
 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
 Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

Someone suggested running alsamixer in answer to someone with something like mine .

Alsamixer lists the card as Hd-Audio Generic with Realtek ALC887-VD chip . When I checked the auto mute button was enabled, I did as the article suggested and disabled the auto mute button. I stopped pulse audio and restarted but this did not fix the problem.

When I looked further I saw that the computer thinks the sound card is unplugged. My question is how do I fix it so my sound card
shows up in the sound settings ouput window?

Replying to the automated email and attaching a file doesn't work. The script creates a URL. Post the URL as an update please

Replying to the automated email and attaching a file doesn't work. The script makes a convenient URL you can post as an update on your post. Please supply the URL.

Stupid me! Today while rearranging the cables for my 5.1 speakers
noticed that I had put one of the connection to the sound card in the
wrong place. reset to the proper place all is well.

Problem solved
