Computer won't boot up

Asked by david

I have been running Ubuntu Linux for about 6 months. Yesterday I turned on my computer and it won't boot. The screen is just black and it won't do anything. Any suggestions on what I can try?

Thanks

Sounds like a hardware fault.
Does it beep? is the fan running? Does the LED on the keyboard light up when you hit CAPS LOCK? Does anything show on the screen *at all*?
I would suggest opening the box and taking out the cards that are in there (apart from the video card if that's a separate card).

Does it then show anything on screen?

If so, start putting the cards back in to see which one is responsible for the fault.

Have you got an Ubuntu 8.04 live CD?
Try booting from that to see if that gets you anywhere.
