I am considering changing from windows XP and need drivers for my
printer and scanners !

I would suggest trying to open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type

sudo apt-get install hpijs foomatic-db-hpijs

The connect the printer and go to System menu, Administration, Printing to configure.

Sounds like it's been working under Ubuntu for quite some time...

MESS, Linux works differently to MS Windows. The drivers are built in.

Click on System then Administration and then Printing to activate your printer.

I have a similar problem with the 5740 since I upgraded to Hardy 8.0.4:
