Cannot get wireless internet.

Asked by aubriisloved

I do not get computer lingo at all. I cannot hook up to wireless internet. It recognizes it, but it asks for a passphrase. How do I know what my pass phrase is? And why the hell do you guys not have a phone number?!?

Well, the phone number part is because we're just volunteers. The question on the passphrase...where are you trying to connect? Is it a public place or a home router? If it is your home router, you can either reset it (less preferable) or log into it with a computer that's directly connected (via a cable) to the router. Please let me know what's going on, and we'll go from there.

Okay well it is a home router, but the thing is I can connect from the same computer (the one I am on now) through the operating system Windows XP, but when I go to connect via uBuntu it says I need a passphrase. I called Quest to get myself hooked up through Windows but they couldn't help me trouble shoot uBuntu. It shows the name and everything when I click on the computer in the corner but it asks for a passphrase and don't know what to put there.

Well, it should be whatever phrase is on the router. XP probably has it saved. The worst case scenario, if you can't remember the passcode (usually a phone number, etc.) you can normally push hold down the reset button the back of the most routers for about 30 seconds and it will clear the passcodes, etc.
Just curious, what is the model number of your router?

How would I find the router number? We did reset it last night. Didn't work

look on the bottom of the router and you should see something like netgear
something or another or linksys xxxx or trendnet xxxx for example.

From within Windows, select the "Run" dialog from the "Start" menu. Type "cmd" (without quotation marks) and hit Enter.

In the command line, type "ipconfig", hit Enter again. Whatever it says is your gateway is also your router's IP.

Enter that IP in a browsers address bar and hit Enter.

Now you're in the browser menu. Here you should be able to find/change your wireless password.

substitute "router menu" for "browser menu", obviously...

I got that.

You don't know you're wireless password, right?

Thus it needs to be changed, right?

From within Windows it'll be easiest for you to find out the router's IP.

Which in turn is needed to access the router configuration.

Which in turn has got to be accessed to change the wireless pass...

UGH! You would think a operating system would have a phone number.
