Wireless problems HP x360 13 new install 16.10

Asked by Russell Kelley

Okay so first off this seems to be a problem encountered by many people, my wireless lan is hard blocked and the hardware key does nothing to unblock it.

I started with google and have run the following:

sudo rfkill list all

result:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

sudo rfkill unblock all
no change

added wmi to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

reboot
no result

added acer_wmi to the same

reboot
no result

I have not tried a boot into windows, mostly because I don't have a live cd that works and I wiped my primary drive to install Ubuntu

Went through bios, no wireless settings, tried a reset to no avail.

Do you have a switch to enable/disable the WiFi? If so, press it.

The wmi module may be needed so use the following command to remove from the blacklist and reboot

sudo sed -i 's/blacklist wmi/#blacklist wmi/' /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Done, after reboot 'sudo rfkill list all' results in

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes

I was able to clear the soft blocked with 'sudo rfkill unblock all' however it remains hard blocked

Fn+F12 still has no result neither does F12 by itself, again tried at power on and during boot as well as once loaded

It is a HP system; you might try using the hp_wmi kernel module.

What output do you get for

sudo rfkill list
sudo modprobe hp_wmi
sudo rfkill list

I agree with Manfred and Jeremy.

wmi should NOT be blacklisted
acer_wmi should be blacklisted
hp_wmi should NOT be blacklisted

With those blacklist settings, wireless should become enabled after a reboot.

Okay Manfred see below, it would seem hp_wmi is not there.

russell@Ubuntu-Prog:~$ sudo rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes
russell@Ubuntu-Prog:~$ sudo modprobe hp-wmi
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'hp_wmi': No such device
russell@Ubuntu-Prog:~$ sudo rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

also ran the below

russell@Ubuntu-Prog:~$ modinfo hp-wmi

still no wifi after you suggestion Mark only acer_wmi is blacklisted at this point, also per some other posts I tried booting into a windows live cd, wifi works there switched back to ubuntu and no change.

Is wmi still blacklisted?

What is the output of
sudo modprobe wmi
sudo modprobe spares-keymap

no wmi is not blacklisted

russell@Mate-Prog:~$ sudo modprobe wmi
[sudo] password for russell:
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'wmi': No such device
russell@Mate-Prog:~$ sudo modprobe spares-keymap
modprobe: FATAL: Module spares-keymap not found in directory /lib/modules/4.9.0-040900-generic
russell@Mate-Prog:~$ sudo modprobe hp_wmi
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'hp_wmi': No such device

also just going through dmesg from boot I found the below:

8.948956] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 3160, REV=0x164
[ 8.950685] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: L1 Enabled - LTR Enabled
[ 8.950987] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: RF_KILL bit toggled to disable radio.
[ 8.951023] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: L1 Enabled - LTR Enabled

also thought I would note that I have upgraded bios to F.35 and am now booting kernel 4.9, I also have to boot acpi=off (which I am beginning to think is the real culprit here) have tried all debug steps for acpi to no avail, which menat about 30 cycles up and down with boot hanging at the same point I will be posting a second seperate question on that.

Even if acpi=off might not necessarily be the culprit, it is a good idea to try getting BIOS and boot settings right before digging further into the WLAN issue.

I have to apologize for a typo error (or maybe wrong autocorrection); one of the commands should have been
sudo modprobe sparse-keymap

Can you help with this problem?
