Failure to download extra data files (ttf-mscorefonts-installer)

I have repeatedly been informed of a “Failure to download extra data files”:

Running “this action now” does not resolve the issue.

I have then repeatedly tried to install ttf-mscorefonts-installer via command-line (following instructions posted at http://askubuntu.com/questions/153928/), but ttf-mscorefonts-installer fails because of multiple reasons:

- Download of .exe files fails with error 404 Not Found [i.e. andale32.exe, arial32.exe, arialb32.exe];
- Download of .exe files fails with Hash Sum mismatch [i.e. andale32.exe, arial32.exe];
- Once download succeeded .exe files couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied) [i.e. andale32.exe, arial32.exe, arialb32.exe].

Errors are *not* consistent and possibly difficult to reproduce, so I am attaching a log file with multiple attempts

Try chowning the files in /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial/ to your user after the download instead of deleting them.

If you can find an alternative download for the files and place them in the same place then the package will install. Seems sourceforge is having some issues.

I am suffering this too. Please look properly at the OP's log file ... there are 404 error. The path to the files must have changed on Sourceforge.

The solutions involving "partial" will not work as nothing is downloaded.

This is a bug in ttf-mscorefonts-installer

I agree with @kimbo-kaz. I can not chown files that fail to download (fully). Manually scavenging exe files from SourceForge might be a workaround, but does not resolve a ttf-mscorefonts-installer malfunction.

I have now manually downloaded and installed ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb as pointed out by @wa113y3s, and wait to see if the “Failure to download extra data files” shows up again.

As of today, the warning “Failure to download extra data files” has not shown up again. Attempts to reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer via the command line fail (see below), because `ttf-mscorefonts-installer cannot be downloaded`.

While it seems that it is possible to work around the problem, the underlying problem with the installation of ttf-mscorefonts-installer probably prevails.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to fix the problem. It would seem that the problem I outlined is still not solved. So, what happens now as the situation is unresolved and therefore left hanging.
I did also ask, what packages I have to UN-install or how to do the un-install. Although that question might by the Ubuntu experts seem to be a little newbyish it would have been nice if someone pointed me in the right direction so as to enable me to educate myself. Another point I would raise is. I am an English and a retired high tec consutant systems problem solver to both the military and the high end commercial market and though I have searched extensively I can't find out what on earth chown is

Here is what howefield says:

"The 3.4 version of the ttf-mecorefonts-installer package is broken.

Sourceforge (where the actual font files are downloaded from) changed the location that the fonts are stored rendering the package broken. I'd suggest purging that broken 3.4 version of the package and instead install the 3.6 version of the package from an alternative source, eg

Code:

sudo apt purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

to get rid of the current package

wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb -P ~/Downloads

to download the 3.6 version of the package to your Downloads folder, and

sudo apt install ~/Downloads/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb

to install the new package."

First reported against 16.04 and two years later 18.04 Alpha 2 *STILL* has this issue word-for-word?

Could you just kick the MS Fonts package to the kerb?
