HP crashes Ubuntu16.10

Asked by primr

My HP Pavilion Slimline crashes on 16.10, 64 or 32 bit version.

It will run but opening up a file or even changing options in the system and the mouse freezes.

The only recovery is to remove power and restart it.

Computer is a Pentium Dual core with 4 gig of memory.

I have run the memory test on the gparted live cd and memory shows good after multiple passes.

When it freezes, can you press CTRL + ALT + F1 and login? You can check logs from there.

Have you also tried a different desktop session like XFCE?

No it just freezes and the only thing I can do is power off the computer.
Since I sent the question I have removed the processor chip and reinstalled it.
I have loaded Linux mint on it before i removed and reinstalled the processor chip.
I did have a lockup on mint but haven't since I re-seated the processor.
In the next few weeks I will reload Ubuntu and see it was a connection problem.
This is an old computer maybe 10 years, but had good memory (4 gig) and ran Windows Vista.

Try a non compositing distribution like Xubuntu. Preferably 14.04 to test

Think I have solved the problem.
It appear now the DVD drive is defective, and is not producing correct output.
I put a drive that had Ubuntu from another computer and it works perfectly.
The drive in question is a DVD RW drive but will not play DVD RW disks back.

This computer finally failed, looks like it was a bad computer not a OS problem.
Thanks for the help, Rich Prim
