FIREFOX DOWNLOAD VERY SLOW

Asked by jameswatkins

After many probs with cannot connect to server I have finally got Firefox in Ubuntu to start up without this message. However while trying to download startup page the download circle top right is still going 10 mins later and the usual flashes on my ADSL box are very slow. Downloading under windows is at normal speeds. I have only just started using Ubuntu so do not have lots of clutter in my system yet. Any suggestions please.

Could be an issue with your network adapter or alternatively IPV6 needs to be disabled.

What is your network adapter?

Can you open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type...

ifconfig

sudo lshw -C network

Post the results back here so we can have a look

I have a problem. I can get the info you request under ubuntu but as the internet connection in ubuntu is slow and has yet to connect I can only contact you when operating Windows and the copy in ubuntu does not transfer to windows so that I can send info.
Any suggestions?

So how do I disable IPV6.
And is there a sourse of relevant commands for sudo with info?

I tried the following command to edit ipv6
sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
but it would not let me edit the line
alias net.pf.10 ipv6
and replacing the vi with edit merely produced a warning message.
So how am I meant to disable the ipv6?

try

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases

That's an easier editor with a GUI
Then restart the machine.

Is your machine dual-boot with windows or are you using two separate machines?

My machine is dual boot.
If you are sending me info requiring direct access to ubuntu it might be easier to email me at
<email address hidden>
as I can then operate within ubuntu
Thanks

I carried out your suggestion.
After rebooting I found the firefox download still did not go fast and
was still causing download button to keep cycling.
I again checked aliases and found the change I made was carried out so
ipv6 does not appear to be the problem.

Well, small world. I have an exemail account too (Sydney) :)

If you have Windows and Ubuntu on the same machine then you can get to your WIndows drives from Ubuntu.
Try right-clicking on the top toolbar and choose "Add to Panel". Then look for and add the the "Disk Mounter".
This will add an icon for every mountable partition found on your system.
The mounted ones will have a green light on them, and the others can be mounted by clicking on their icons.

Then you will be able to save files to the Windows partition so that you can post to us here.
(It's better to keep the discussion here so that others can help out and also the information may help others in future.)

So you cannot get to ANY webpages?
And you DO have email access from within Ubuntu? With Evolution or Thunderbird?

If IPV6 is not the issue then the network settings are the next most obvious.
We need to be able to see the results of

Open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type...

ifconfig

sudo lshw -C network

Cannot get to any webpage....even direct access to my modem using its address acts in the same way.
Now if I follow your above instructions in ubuntu how EXACTLY do I transfer them to the Mounting which I succeeded in doing.
Have email access from ubuntu using either gmail or thunderbird.
You are sending this to rutherford, Maitland !!

If you click on the icon for the Windows Partition you can choose to mount it and also then to open it.
Then you can copy in a file with the details of the commands above within it.

Hmm, you say you have gmail access????
I presume that is through Thunderbird rather than Firefox?

If email is working then we can assume that Internet access is working.
Are you sure of this?

If so, then the issue is further narrowed to Firefox.

It may be also prudent to stop Firefox from trying IPV6 by typing "about:config" in the Firefox address bar and then searching for "IPV6"
Double-click it to set the "network.dns.disableIPv6" setting to true.

Restart Firefox and try again.

Will try.
Not being too bright I am afraid that the statement
Then you can copy in a file with the details of the commands above within it
is a little ambiguous to me.
As Dick Smith said in a radio interview not long ago he used to sell computers but does not use one himself as the systems are still not reliable enough.

OK, first try the Firefox IPV6 disable thing above and if that does not work
Open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type

ifconfig > ~/Desktop/ifconfigtest.txt
gedit ~/Desktop/ifconfigtest.txt

Copy or save that file into the disk that WIndows is installed in so that you can then paste the results in here for us to see.

When I fired up firefox this time the google screen appeared. I then choose search ubuntu - result immediate.
Then I clicked on the ubuntu support and 95% of orange progress bar at bottom right of screen filled in then stopped with green indicator still flashing.
When I tried about.config with or without " " I got the cannot find server so could not access this.
Exactly what do I do to "Copy or save that file into the disc that Windows is installed in.

The "About: Config" has a colon not a period between "about" and "config"

I have tried the About Config 3 times...this time it went in ok but on each occasion it timed out!!!!
Tomorrow I will try to send that info but you did not answer that part of the question about how to put it in the window. A lot of these things are very apparent to keen types but not to a someone like myself who only uses the computer for basic needs.
Cheers

Ok, let's try it a little differently.

WHat version of Firefox are you using? This is in the Help menu, About Mozilla Firefox.

Now, in firefox, where you would normally put the http://www.google.com try putting in just this and hit enter

about:config

that may show a warning screen first, click through that to a screen that should show a load of configuration options
The one we want can be found by typing "ipv6" in the filter textbox shown

Double-click it to set the "network.dns.disableIPv6" setting to true.
