firefox reports server not available in ubuntu

Asked by jameswatkins

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed through Windows xp. If I start up windows then ubuntu after restart firefox normally works but if I start directly with Ubuntu I get server not available. However gmail works ok. How can I get Firefox to start directly through Ubuntu? Or is there another browser which does not have this problem?

Hi, James

Have you compared Firefox proxy settings between Windows and Ubuntu?

James, are the Ubuntu panel settings identical to the windows panel settings, and if not, can you change it so Ubuntu settings match windows settings?

PS; The rest is blanked out *because* you have the proxy settings box ticked.

When I untick the proxy box the only info shown is the local host address....any other options eg checking on local host info in Windows.
I cannot see too many people going through this when Windows installs the browser without these problems.

Why not try simply ticking [No Proxy]

Otherwise any other ideas please.
When I tried altering one of the settings the computer completely frooze and I had to reset the machine.
Firefox still ok under windows.

James, I'm sorry, but I've gone as far as I can go with your problem. I
can't replicate it.

If only because of personal prejudice, I refuse to corrupt Ubuntu inside
Windows on my machine because my dual boot with WinXP works supremely well.

MY AIM WAS TO GET EVERYTHING WORKING AND THEN USE UBUNTU ONLY. I CAN ONLY DO THIS IF I CAN GET MY FIREFOX BROWSER IN UBUNTU WORKING. AND MY MACHINE DOES DUAL BOOT. PLEASE PASS ME ON TO ANOTHER PERSON IF YOU CANNOT HELP.
