scim-bridge is not available...

Asked by ChenMing

Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 and I'm having trouble getting with SCIM and inputting Chinese characters.
I can get Chinese Characters to work on text editor but not in Firefox or Open Office.

I've followed the online documentation and it says I need scim-bridge as I'm running 7.10
I've tried to install scim-bridge, however scim-bridge doesn't appear in the Synaptic Package Manager and
when I try to install scim-bridge through Terminal I get the following info.

Package scim-bridge is not avaliable, but is referred to by another package,
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted or is only
avaliable from another source
E: Package scim-bridge has no installation candidate

I've since D/L'd a scim-bridge package from an external source but I've no idea how to install it.

I'm new to Linux so simple clear advice would be greatly appreciated.

hello

Its scim-bridge-agent

sudo apt-get install scim-bridge-agent

Follow this link:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM

Look specially for:

Note : You should already be able to use SCIM input in a few applications, like gedit (Application>Accessories>Text Editor), by right clicking on the document, then selecting Input Methods>SCIM Input Method. However, it won't work in the others, like Open Office. (However it works in OO when you have Chinese environment and Install im-switch and select "scim" as default)

For Firefox you don't have to do anything. After language support is installed it should display Chinese well. However, a few pages may have coding errors.

..and read below it....

It works 100% - 你明白我说什么?

Hi,

I tried the scim-bridge-agent suggestion using the command line you
suggested.

Terminal responds with

E: Couldn't find package scim-bridge-agent

I have been able to input Chinese characters on text editor using the method
you've described, so that's no problem.
I can read the Chinese characters you inputted, they show up on my screen
but still I cannot respond using them.

I've also been to the page you linked many times, I've followed all the
advice they give including the advice given under

"Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon"

It's at the first line that I encounter problems. scim-bridge isn't found
and
as I said above scim-bridge-agent isn't found either.

Any further suggestions?
Do you need any more information from me?

I know nothing about your problem, but with a simple synaptic search I see that scim-bridge-agent is already installed on my system. Have you enabled repositories and installed ubuntu-restricted-extras ?

"Have you enabled repositories and installed ubuntu-restricted-extras ?"

What does this mean and how do I do it?
(I'm new to Linux and don't know my way around that well just yet)

That's ok, I'm also relatively new, and using Ubuntu 8.04

Someone recently posted this link which should explain it all better for you

Hi again,

I've managed to install the restricted extras, and after doing this I've
managed to find and install the

scim-bridge agent and all the other little extras that seem to go with it.

I followed the link

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM

and followed all the instructions, I managed to delete the .scim folder from
the home folder but couldn't find the .xinput as it suggests.

Any ideas where it should be.

That said, I still cannot input chinese text in firefox or openoffice.

What do I have to do now?

Hi,

I encounter very similar problem with SCIM, I tried to follow instructions here and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM but neither did not work.

I use vi-telex input method to input Vietnamese which is supported by m17n-db package.
I can input Vietnamese in gedit and some programs by right click then navigating Input Method, select either SCIM Input Method or SCIM Bridge Input Method (active vi-telex by press Ctrl+Space). But that menu doesn't appear in OO or Firefox. All I want is SCIM, and I didn't have to select SCIM IM or SCIM Bridge IM before, just trigger SCIM with hotkey Ctrl+Space.

Steps I managed to do are listed following:
- remove and reinstall scim and m17n-db package.
- "im-switch -l" show my prefered input method was scim but scim does not appear by default (since it is not active).
- "im-switch -z en_US.UTF-8 -s scim-bridge" (my locale is en_US.UTF8, also tried with scim) but that didn't work (after re-login even restart).
- tried to edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim, change GTK_IM_MODULE=xim to GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge.

scim worked nice for me before, but now it doesn't.

Any further suggestions?
