Installed Ubuntu 16.04 to run alongside Windows 10 on a laptop and cannot get wifi

Asked by John Wilson

Installed ubuntu 16.04 to run alongside windows 10 on an hp laptop.
Had wifi during the install but not since.
Wifi works with windows.
In Settings>Software & Updates>Additional Drivers there was a proprietary driver checked.
I unchecked it to see if that helped, it didn't and now "No additional drivers available"

How do I find out what proprietary driver I need?

In software & Updates>Ubuntu Software by changing to the main server, rather than the server for Canada I was able to get an Additional Driver.
Using Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPU's from intel-microcode (proprietary) it is checked but there is a message saying This device is not working.
I can enable wifi but not see any networks.
The processor in the laptop is an Intel Core 13-6100CPU @ 2.30 GHz X 4

Your Terminal output shows the following issues:

  *-network DISABLED
       description: Wireless interface
       product: Wireless 3165

2: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no

wlo1 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

 Release Date: 04/15/2016
 Manufacturer: HP
Product Name: HP Pavilion x360 Convertible

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acerconf:blacklist acer_wmi

hp_wmi 16384 0
acer_wmi 20480 0

Your previous attempt to blacklist acer_wmi did not work, because your file is called /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-acerconf and does not contain .conf at the end!

The GNU/Linux kernel is loading the acer_wmi kernel module, even though you are NOT using Acer hardware.

Both the acer_wmi and hp_wmi kernel modules are running at the same time, causing a conflict and causing the wireless adapter to get deactivated by the acer_wmi kernel module.

However, you are using an HP computer, not an Acer computer.

So the acer_wmi module needs to be blacklisted (= prevent it from starting during boot).

Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal and then press <ENTER>:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, please scroll down and ADD the following configuration line into the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

blacklist acer_wmi

Using the gedit editor, SAVE the change to the

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then REBOOT and retest wireless. This blacklist operation should make
the change permanent, even after rebooting.

This should force the Linux kernel to stop loading the acer_wmi module,
which is probably causing the kernel to soft block your wireless adapter.

The acer-wireless interface is an invalid wireless interface on your
computer, because you are using an HP computer , not an
ACER computer.

By the way: first time I helped you out was 6 years ago. How time flies! Do you still have your boat (trips) ?

It worked, connected to a hidden wi-fi network as networking was not detecting Wi-Fi Networks (it was greyed out).
After updating and rebooting everything is working normally.
Many thanks
Yes we have had several power boats over the years.
6 years ago it would have been a 25' Bayliner but 3 years ago we got a 28' Cutwater
I am just using OpenCPN for trip planning or as a backup but I had better install it on this new laptop before too long.

Sorry to re-open this question.
Took the laptop with me when I went on a European visit and cannot log onto Wi-Fi when I am on Ubuntu.
Networking does not detect any Wi-Fi network even though it is enabled and I cannot log onto a hidden Wi-Fi network even though I have the data as Networking is not detecting any Wi-Fi networks.
When I boot up the laptop to Windows 10 it all works and that is how I am sending this e-mail.
Any suggestions?

It seems if I log onto Windows 10 and then connect to the internet and then do a restart into Ubuntu Networking then detects other networks and I can log on
