Installation CD Error

Asked by nishi

Hi,

while I was installing Ubuntu 8.04, I did a error check of the CD, I got a message saying "1 Error Found".

My questions is, shall I go ahead with installation..? I could not get details of the error message. Can ubuntu ignore the minor errors and let system finish the installation and recover missing/corrupt files later..?

Expecting an answer at earliest.

I use 7.10 now. Thanks for such a lovely OS, dieing to upgrade to 8.04 :)

Thanks in Advance,
nishi :)

i would not risk it. if you use 7.10 now why dont you just go the comfortable way and upgrade via update manager?

Thanks Jonas :)

Actually I don't find upgrading a comfortable way, I have tried it before
and couldnt succeed. Also it takes lot of time. Best way is to install using
CD.

Btw I wud luv to take this risk, as i have nothing to loose in my system,
least will happen that i hv to install it al over again.

my question was just that, like Windows, does Ubuntu ignores minor error or
missing files while installation..?

Appreciated your quick feedback :)

Thanks,
Nishi

Be sure your cd is ok please check the md5sum and compare it with master distribution site.

- Please check the md5sum of your downloaded Ubuntu .iso image file, here the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM howto, and compare with http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/MD5SUMS

- be sure to burn your cd at lower speed you can do usually 4x here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

- Please also check the md5sum of your self burned cd. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

- then to be sure your ram is ok, boot from Ubuntu live cd main menu and at first showed menu, select the item "Memory test" to test your pc ram memory

Hope this helps

Hi Marcobra,

I have followed the below given instructions and the results are fair.

The ISO file md5sum prints this line:

8895167a794c5d8dedcc312fc62f1f1f ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso

and md5sum file on the CD given no errors, it simply came back to normal
prompt after sometime. I think the disk is error free.

SO can I proceed with installation after passing these tests :)

Thanks a lot for your quick responces!!

Nishi :)

Now be sure to upgrade your system to latest packages especially you are using ssh.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type or better copy and paste:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Thank you
