Installed ubuntu 8.04 in windows XP cannot get past login screen

Asked by Catdaddy

I choose Ubuntu from the operating system screen. I get a login screen and I put in my user name followed by the password. Both are accepted but then I get a partial background with distorted colors that returns to a black screen and then the login screen comes back. I checked the ISO before installing and it showed discrete files and seems to be complete. I had no problems installing from the ISO.

Can you please post the output of doing:-
cat ~/.xsession-errors
in a terminal after trying to login? You can access a terminal by switching to a tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Thanks to Jonas & Pramod for their help, but finally ended up downloading and installing the amd64iso and now I can log in, but only in failsafe GNOME. Xscrpt is not accessible. but I can use the OS. It is a slightly different version of the same problem

I'm an old hand at windows, but total newbie at Ubuntu, so I'm unclear as to what exactly this means and how to fix it.

Try this:-
1) Once you reach the GRUB menu, press "E" at the Ubuntu entry.
2) Move down to the kernel entry and press "E" again.
3) Add "nolapic" to the end of the line and press Enter.
4) Boot the modified entry by pressing "B".

See if Ubuntu boots properly that way.

I uninstalled Ubuntu as an application in windows and reinstalled it in a new partition as a separate os. That solved my problem. It runs a lot better standalone. Thanks for all the help.

Ralph Woodgate, please don't post unrelated messages on question from other users, but instead, create a new question. As for your problem, if you're lost both your username and password, you're good for reinstalling.
