I have 7.1 installed on a Win2000 Pro. I want to install 8.04 LTS. How do I begin? Last time I updated it wiped out the computer., Many thanks

Asked by John Goodman

The question is: how do I install (update) the 8.04 LTS (desktop version) on a dual boot computer that has Win 2000 Pro and Ubuntu 7.1 ? When I did a similar upgrade to 7.1 from a previous version, the computer could no longer be used and Windows had to be installed with a formating.

Ubuntu is a wonderful OS but doesn't easily co-habitate. Would it be better if I used Partition Magic's dual boot process and reinstalled 2000 Pro and Ubuntu 8.04?

Since I want to keep Ubuntu up to date and eventually use it only, I do need to know how to do an install that does not incapacitate everything else on the computer.

I had a similar thing happen to me when upgrading from 7.04 to 7.10, but the distro update process has since been smoothed greatly and it shouldn't cause you any problems this time around. just make sure your computer is up to date, then click the 'upgrade distribution' button on the update manager window and let it do its thing. it takes a few hours, but there isnt really anything to worry about. either that, or you could get a copy of the new CD and upgrade from that, though ive never done that before, so i couldnt tell you how effective that is. also, if something happened to go wrong and it hosed your ubuntu install, you wouldn't have to reinstall windows, just use the Super Grub disk to do a 'fix mbr,' or do a fresh install on its original partition. hope that helps...

Thanks so very very much. One question though: what is the Super Grub
disk. I have the new CD. And I suppose that I would enter UBUNTU and
then go to the drive and put the CD into it. Wish I had you over my
shoulder. You sound like you know what you're doing.

The Super GRUB Disk is something that can be used to repair the MBR if something goes wrong with it, there are other tools you can use but SGD is rather reliable and flexible. The Super GRUB Disk can be found here:-

sorry if the reply is a little late, but Pramod answered your SGD question for me...and if you still need the info:

to upgrade from a CD, all you have to do is log into Ubuntu, pop in the new distro CD, and the package manager should recognize that its a new distro cd, and will pop up with a message saying something like:

"A disk containing packages has been inserted. Would you like to start the Package Manager?"

say yes, and Update manager should pop up asking if you want ot install the new distro. Just make sure your current distro installation is fully up-to-date (minus the new distro's packages), and then your ok to begin the install. you've probably already done it by now, but if not i hope this is helpful!

Many Many thanks, When I attempted to use the CD, I had difficulty
because it was inserted upon bootup. So, in desparation, I went online
and downloaded and installed. Using a cable isp, it toom most of
evening and into the night while I was asleep. The download folks have
done a fine job. But ...talk about time!

This week-end, I'll try to do it from the CD so that in future distros
I'll be able to get an unworried night of sleep.

Again Many thanks

glad everything worked out well for you! sorry you had to do take all that time to upgrade, but i suppose alls well that ends well.

just wanted to let you know though, whenever you get a question solved, please select the 'problem solved' option when you make your final post. this way, people surfing the forums for answers can see that your problem was solved, and maybe can follow the steps/advice you were given to solve their own problems. thanks!

Thanks this is my first use. I think that I have found the place to
enter "problem solved" I'll look and see whether it worked. Thanks
again for both helps.
