Removing Evolution

Asked by ChrisCS

Hi, could somebody tell me whether Evolution is part of Ubuntu in the same way that Outlook Express is part of Windows and that it can't therefore be removed. I would like to remove Evolution if possible and replace it with something else - Thunderbird possibly - because try as I might, I cannot get any of my filters to work. I have used Thunderbird in Windows and the filters worked first time but the filters in Evolution in Ubuntu which I wanted to do the same jobs just will not work. I might add that I tried the Windows version of Evolution because at first sight in Ubuntu it seemed quite good but it gave so many error messages in Windows that I removed it.

Well, I think that Evolution in Ubuntu is much more stable than in Windows. But you shouldn't have any problems removing Evolution - things are very modular in Ubuntu.

Hello

First to install thunderbird you can use ubuntuzilla

http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do ref this link..

http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

after getting all the required repositories enabled

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install thunderbird thunderbird-gnome-support

More info:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Thunderbird

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ThunderbirdNewVersion

http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-thunderbird-in-ubuntu.html

and to remove evolution

sudo apt-get remove evolution

Many thanks Bhavani and Martin. I haven't done anything yet but will now know how to now replace Evolution with Thunderbird when I start on it a bit later today. Thanks for all those links Bhavani

Evolution is NOT SAFE TO REMOVE.

1) Add Remove will not allow you to get rid of Evolution - it directs you to synaptic

2) Using Synaptic to remove Evolution is SUICIDE! The menu bar and desktop disappear.

Evolution is an evil program like outlook or ie or messenger... it is part of the os. Apparently there are somewhat complex ways to get rid of it - see other posts.

HINT: For the gurus at Linux if something is unsafe to remove, part of the OS then Synaptic should indicate so...

Hi Tory,

I removed Evolution shortly after the correspondence above (a year ago) and replaced it with Thunderbird. There were no "ill effects" following the removal of Evolution and everything runs normally. The only down side of this is that whenever I run Update Manager it always comes up with updates for the now non-installed Evolution.

It is a pity that there couldn't be a 'flag' somewhere to notify Update Manager that Evolution has been removed and that I therefore don't want updates for it

Thanks, Ive had chaos with Ubuntu 9.04 and Evolution, finally I decided to
do a fresh install and just leave it.. but it seems silly to have it
clumsily linked to vital programs.

Also I have had no success in getting Hulu to show anything but a blank
screen. Other flash sites seem fine.

In the end I am forced back to XP for a while.. but Ubuntu looks better
every year.

Aloha,

Hello again Tory,

I removed Evolution by using Synaptic. If you run it and make it find Evolution, there are a lot of entries with green boxes beside them but the one to right click on is the single Evolution with the description of it being a mail client (I forget the exact wording). If you right click it you can mark it "for complete removal" and Synaptic will tell you what else is going to be removed. If you then click "Apply", Evolution and its plugins etc. will then be removed without you losing the desktop and menu bar. The only other thing that you can remove is the calendar part of Evolution. The other "bits" of Evolution that you will see with green boxes beside them are required by other programs such as Ekiga and (I think) Pidgin, and they should not be removed.

When I first tried to remove Evolution I right-clicked on all the Evolution entries that had a green box beside them and ended up minus the desktop and, presumably, a lot of other things with no idea of how to get them back again and had to re-install Ubuntu in the end.

A lot of people don't seem to like Evolution so it is a pity it seems so bound into Ubuntu. It would be nice in a forthcoming "incarnation" of Ubuntu to have the option at the start of the installation to install either Evolution or some other e-mail client.

I installed Thunderbird as my e-mail client after following the Ubuntuzilla link that Bhavani Shankar gave me.

I also use XP but I haven't the courage, or the experience with Linux, to remove it from my hard disc yet

I think I clicked on too many things with the word evolution and paid the
learning price.

Canonical guys should take in to account those messages. They want to get corporate accounts with Evoluton but it doesn't work like this. You have to market a balloon like MS does.
Please exclude this Evolution thingy from our lives.
