Root file system not recognized for install

Asked by sjm

In trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 desktop, I run into the following error:

I have a couple of disks with stuff I want to save and want to make a multiboot system, so I went through the "manually partition" option. I made four partitions in gparted (for "/", "/home", swap, and "/shareddata") and wanted them as jfs partitions. That was fine and I went through the prepare mount points and changed the choices to what I wanted, but in the summary saw that one of the choices was changed to ext3 and the install failed on trying to mount a jfs file system as ext3.

I then started the install again, but through a console first set up the partitions with fdisk and mkfs.jfs. I chose "manually partition" again, but skipped through gparted as everything was already set up. Now, when I change the choices in the "prepare mount points" screen to what I want I keep getting an error of "No root file system" and can't get past that screen.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I have an IDE drive that shouldn't enter the discussion as I don't want to touch that drive. I have a SATA drive that I have installed WinXP on (sda1) with a small data partition too (sda5).
I partitioned the sata disk with these other partitions: sda2 (ubuntu root - "/"), sda3 (swap), sda6 (untouched, will be another linux root partition for another distro), sda7 ("/home"), and sda8 ("/shareddata")
The "prepare mount points" screen picks an hda partition for root (which I don't want), but when I change it to sda2, I can't get past that screen as it keeps telling me there is "no root file system".

Thanks for any ideas!

Hello sjm,
the root file system can't be a jfs, because the filesystem from which you want boot must be build in the kernel not as module.
You can use for the root partition ext3 or reiserfs, if you want a journalling filesystem as /. I would recommend to use reiserfs, that's what I use since many years and it works fine for me, but that's only a suggestion.
For more information have a look in this documents:

https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/installation-guide/i386/index.html

http://jfs.sourceforge.net/project/pub/jfsroot.html

Hello sjm,
I just saw that there is a jfs module on the initrd. That could mean that your bios setup is incorrect. Make sure that the disk from which you want boot is the boot disk in your bios configuration. By the way on that disk must grub too.
The following link explains the naming convention of grub:

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Naming-convention.html

Mr. Canis,

Thank you for your help. I tried the install again, but chose reiserfs for the root partition and everything worked well. Thanks.

I am trying to install ubuntu 6.10. I previously had Suse 10.1 installed on

hda5 swap 512Mb
hda5 / 7Gb
hda7 /home 2Gb

and I tell the partitioner to use these, and reformat them to reiserfs (used for Suse)

It says there is no root file system!

I also note a blank line in the list of disks/partitions offered.

How do I proceed from here?

Regards
- Roger -

Hello Roger,
which partition shall to be for ubuntu?
How shall to be your partition layout?
In your post you have hda5 twice that doesn't work.

For example:

hda1 swap will be used from both (ubuntu and SuSE)
hda2 / root fs for ubuntu
hda3 / root fs for SuSE
hda4 /home will be used from both (ubuntu and SuSE)

My apologies for my typing error: I meant to say:-

I am trying to install ubuntu 6.10. I previously had Suse 10.1 installed on

hda5 swap 512Mb
hda6 / 7Gb .... ubuntu root
hda7 /home 2Gb .... ubuntu /home

and I tell the partitioner to use these, and reformat them to reiserfs (as used for Suse)

I do not want to keep Suse.

It says there is no root file system!

I also note a blank line in the list of disks/partitions offered.

How do I proceed from here?
