Linksys wireless works on 7.10 but not 8.04

Asked by GaryTX

Installed version 7.10 months ago and always included updates along the way. Never had to use ndiswrapper. Had no problems with my Linksys wireless PCI card working OK with WEP encryption. Upgraded to 8.04 and my wireless capability quit working altogether (did not recognize my router). I followed troubleshooting guides from ubuntu.com to check for driver, device, ipv6, etc., but the Linksys card could not reach the router. BTW, one trouble-shooting guide says to go to SYSTEM->PREFERENCES -> HARDWARE INFORMATION, but there is no “HARDWARE INFORMATION” menu item! After much frustration, I finally hit the ESC key during the reboot sequence to get a chance to boot from an older version (see list from “/boot” below). Sure enough, I booted from the next newer version (config-2.6.22-14-generic), and had no problem with my wireless card. The kernel associated with config-2.6.24-16-generic is the version that did not work. After that good reboot from the older version, the output from the command “lshw –C network” follows (network:1 is the wireless card).

What can I do to fix this?

Output from “lshw –C network” after booting from older version:

I have the same (?) problem with a ralink 2500 and Ubuntu 8.04, although Ubuntu 7.10 worked without any problems with the wireless router. Tried Kubuntu 8.04 with same result, not working. Changed to Mandriva 2008 KDE, wireless worked. Upgraded to Mandriva 2008.1 Gnome, wireless stopped working as in Ubuntu 8.04.

Would like to know the answer to this problem, as my ocd does not allow me to change back to an older version and I do not want to revert to Windows XP!

I previously tried the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=684495 without avail. The logical name showed up as "wmaster0" as in GaryTX's post above. In desperation, also as previously the connection was shown as "wlan0" in Ubuntu 7.10, I followed the instructions as given, save to change "wmaster0" with "wlan0" as the logical name obtained by the "lshw -C network" command - and it worked! I also tried the same substitution in Mandriva 2008.1, with the same result - it also worked after this (although not according to the instructions of "How To: Manual Network Configuration without the need for Network Manager").

Further to my post of 2008-06-01:
Although this method established a connection, it is very erratic and not very stable. Yesterday I could not establish a connection at all, until I moved the router and put it on top of desktop's case, when the the connection showed only 76% (and two of the of the computers at the other end of our home lost their connections being out of range). Until I find an alternative working distro, unfortunately, I am reverting to XP.

Still have this problem. Been over two months now. I've tried numerous procedures to try to fix this problem and shared ideas with other users. No luck. The only way I can get any consistency, i.e. consistent connection to my Linksys router, is to interrupt the boot sequence and boot from the old kernel vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic. Did not need ndis_wrapper before. Trying to avoid it this time around also. This seems like a very basic problem to be fixed. Any new ideas?

The latest Ubuntu kernel solved my problem ( -19?) - but the only way I
could get a fair connection with the original Ubuntu 8.04, was to put the
router on top of the computer box!

This may help.
I have also had this problem. I can connect wireless to VISTA, Mandriva, and Kubuntu V7 but not 8.04.
I have been using this Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 with a SpeedStream 4200 DSL modem in bridge mode. I then feed this into a LINKSYS WRT54GX2 to get my wireless connection with no problems except with Kubuntu 8.04. I use the same security coding on all the above systems.

Now, I recently took this same PC to another location of mine and tried to log on to 8.04. It made a connection without the 28% hang up! Every thing worked fine. At this location I have a Westell 327W modem/router/wireless all in one unit.

I purchased another Westell 327W for my home and tried it with KUBUNTU 8.04. IT WORKED FINE.

It appears that 8.04 is sensitive ( driver problem ) to the wireless communications device connected to the PC.
I tried to adjust some of the timing on the LINKSYS wireless but could not get it to work with 8.04.
Now I am using the Westell for everything.

Thanks a bunch! I very much appreciate your information! I'm still
booting my computer with the older Ubuntu OS (hit ESC during reboot
sequence and selection older version). I'll now check into the Westell
327W.

I did not ever have a problem with LINKSYS routers/wireless. They make a good product. Before you buy a Westell 327W you may get with LINKSYS support to see if they can help correct the problem.
However, this problem is with 8.04's driver, not the LINKSYS wireless.

You may try ebay for the Westell VersaLink 327W. It was made for Verizon DSL but it will work with any DSL. I may be wrong but I think it will also work with cable.

I know that the Linksys product is good, but they do not support Linux.
Hence, I have not called them. I'm using the same router for both the
Linux machine and a Windows XP machine, and never have a problem with my
XP machine. I believe 8.04 definitely has the problem, but I cannot
seem to get the attention of Ubuntu that supports 8.04 on this matter.
When I boot from the older Ubuntu version from last Feb 08, there is no
problem.

Thanks for your patience and for letting me know. I have no problems
now with my wireless connect. I grew to love Unix after using it in the
work place for many years. After retiring I loaded up Ubuntu and enjoy
working with it also. The world runs mainly on Windows, but I like
Linux better. I think Europe is smarter by getting more into Linux and
taking Microsoft to court on some key issues.
