After Install restart hangs at Splashscreen

Asked by DonGrann

Installation of Ubuntu 8.04 i386 desktop from live and alternative cd's
Live cd.
Works perfectly using live session (but have to edit grub menu via F6 + F6 and acivating on drop down menu - ACPI=off NOAPIC NOLAPIC), everything works.
When in the live session, I select "install", everything goes as normal for an installation (have installed to 5 other machines using this method), but on restart after installation, the spash screenstarts and builds the bar up to the last segment, then hangs for 2 or 3 mins, the screen then goes into script mode and reports a fault on "starting hardware abstraction layer hald, after another minute or so then reports repeating a line "[altering figures] bug:soft lockup - cpu#0 stuck for 11s! [dbus-daemon-lau:5126].

Alternative CD
At the grub menu F6 + F6 and activate ACPI=off NOAPIC NOLAPIC and enter for install, install goes OK, then restart, once again the Splash screen appears and builds up the bar to the last segment and again hangs, this time it doesn't go into script mode.
If I press Esc, it then goes into script mode and goes to the line again where it says "Starting hardware abstraction layer hald" all above this line states OK, but now this line does not go any further.

This machine worked dual booting with XP/Vista and Ubuntu 6.10, 7.04, 7.10 and now with the live session but refuses to start after installation.

Have tried the above several times to check that I haven't missed anything, but the results are always the same.

Hope someone can see a workaround for me,
Thanks
Don

Cracked it!
Used Alternative cd
At the grub menu
Pressed escape, select leave graphic menu
At the Boot: prompt, after Boot: type install acpi=off noapic nolapic
Then press rtn, the installation starts - answer all questions as normal.
When the machine restarts, the system boots correctly and everything works perfectly.
Pity there are not any instructions provided o the grub menu on how to do the above procedure, this cost me a lot of frustration, but due to the live session working perfectly, knew it must work installed, so determined to find out why.
Hope this may help some of the many reporting live and installiation problems

for a new user ...what don wrote is all a questionmark

i mean i also face the same hangs at all my 3 machines with different configs

in all the 3 machines, windows works perfectly, fedora also works good, but ubuntu gets stuck at the splash screen

i tried all methods of installing i.e the cds which came to my address, the internet download of the os, after that the "install inside" method, the normal method, and also the try ubuntu interface before installing.

what i mean to ask is why does it hang at all times at splash screens.

i have 8.10 latest too with the same result.

my vendor says its some bios or config problem that the machine wont accept any other os other than vista or xp. but then why does fedora work on them.

pls help

regards vinay.

please, try to install but, with noapic and acpi=off options enabled,
you can do that, pressing F6 key when CD booting to install

cheers

vinay,
I now only use the normal i386 Ubuntu 8.10 iso and burn it to cd and use it for the testing and installation on my machines.
If any fail to load during the testing Ubuntu phase, I use the following method - which works for me on the one machine that freezes during loading the system:
On starting the disk, choose the language you require.
* When the Main menu appears
press F6 TWICE
from the menu that now appears - select NOAPIC and NOLAPIC (select by down arrow and spacebar - a cross will appeara gainst each selection).
When this is done press ESC to get out of this menu
Now prtess F4 and select SAFE GRAPHICS MODE (select by down arrow - the item changes colour)
Once again press ESC to get out of this menu. *
Now select either item 1 Try Ubuntu or Item 2 Install from the main menu - I use testing first and if that works, then restart and complete instructions between the two * again and select item 2 Install.
This works for my machine - hopefully it wortks for your machine as well.
