Ubuntu/Kubuntu freezing right after login

Asked by Hexling

Hello,

I'm having serious problems with Ubuntu/Kubuntu 8.04 LTS. Installation and everything works well,
but after that 2-4 minutes after logging into the machine my whole computer hangs. Nothing helps
except the power-off button.

Since I always have up to 2 minutes until the hang occurs I've already tried several things. Doesnt
matter if X is running or not (no X process running, console mode only) and the machine stands still
completely. I cannot even ssh to the computer.

My PC is pretty unexotic I suppose (Intel Core2Duo 2,4 somewhat Ghz, NVIDIA Geforce 7950 gt, 2GB ram - checked
already no errors there - sb audigy 2zs, an isdn card, 2x 200GB SATA 2x 160GB Ide HDD, a DVD-ROM and a DVD-Writer drive).

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Im quite a bit desperate at the moment. Thanks.

The same problem different setup: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/222733 (pentium M 1,6 Ghz, Radeon 9700)

Are you also seeing some visual chaos when starting up?

No. No chaos. Everything is pretty fine, except that after a short time, the system hangs.
No matter what I do, even if I do not do anything at all.

Chaos, yes character, not graphical.
The i386 version id DOA. I have been fooling with it all day.
If you will select the option to check the CD for integrity, you will find that the CD has three damaged files.

The 64 bit version seems to work OK. I Switched from my test machine pentium4 to a 64 bit and am sending this answer from Ubuntu ( 64 bit ) running from the CD rom.

I dont get any character chaos whatsoever. Integrity check for the cd went perfectly well.

I will try tomorrow if the 64bit version behaves ok - alas, I would not be able to use that
for production work since I still need full 32 bit support :(

I now have a dual boot 64bit laptop.
Totally straight forward without a hitch.

I have an nvidia card, and my Ubuntu 8.04 install freezes about 4 seconds after I hit return on my password for login. I had recently upgraded my memory, so thought that might be the problem. removed one stick and everything started to work again. Just did the security updates and restarted, and it's freezing again, exactly as it did before, 4 seconds after login. Mouse stops responding, no keyboard, nothing but hard reset. Specs for my machine, and other debugging info all ready posted here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4817281#post4817281

(though I have since removed the 3rd DIMM)

Now, I suspect some sort package upgrade problem. I just have no idea what the problem package might be.

Can you help with this problem?
