Ubuntu 8.04 won't install, 7.10 is now installed

Asked by Dave Foreman

I followed the instructions in upgrading your existing Ubuntu Installation. I have downloaded and burned te iso file to a cd.
The cd is seen but the upgrade dialog is not displayed so I used Alt+F2, which asks for my password and then goes away, and doesn't come back.

If you have downloaded the Live CD, then restart the computer and boot from the CD. Install Ubuntu from there. Don't be afraid to ask for more help!

Yes, it will upgrade the 7.10 installation. Have a look at the documentation for information on upgrading a previous version of ubuntu here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

Also, here is a screencast that may help:

CloudFX proposed the following answer:
Yes, it will upgrade the 7.10 installation.

I tried booting from the CD but it appeared that it was going to repartition
the hard disk and make a completly fresh installation..
Nothing came up that indicated that an upgrade would be performed. The
section below the dashed line is what I have tried to execute several times.
Putting the CD in just seems to place the CD icon on the desktop and I get a
browser type window with the CD folders icons etc. showing. I then try
Alt+F2 and put in hte line as indicated below and get a password box, put my
passwork in and the box disapears and nothing else happens. I looked at the
flash upgrade video but it really was not very helpful to me at this time. I
am very much a novice in Linux.
Thanks

Upgrading using the alternate CD/DVD
Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the
Internet.
1. Download and burn the alternate installation CD.
2. Insert it into your CD-ROM drive.
3. A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using
that CD.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the
following
command using Alt+F2:
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

Have a look at the documentation for information on upgrading a previous
version of ubuntu here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

You will need to choose 'manual', and select the Ubuntu partition. It doesn't automatically overwrite it by default.

I was unable to get the installer to accept the above command.
So again I used the normal Synaptic Package Manager and this time after about 8 hours, the upgrade finished.
The other day when I requested help, the time to install was going to be 3 days plus.
I do thank you for the help.

Great! I believe it was so long because the server was being used so much by people wanting to do the same thing you tried.

Glad to hear it all worked out though!
