Installation of Ubuntu 8.40

Asked by gene goon

I need to know the proper step by step installation procedure to follow to install the new Ubuntu 8.40. I have a H. P. Media Center P. C. with a 32 inch monitor.
500 gig hard drive
300 gig personal media bay hard drive
10 gig boot drive for Vista
2.4 dual core 2 CPU 32 bit
Windows Vista Ultimate O. S.
I would like to keep the Vista and use ether/or both systems. I do not have partitioning software, but was told it comes on the Ubuntu down load. I have down loaded the ubuntu-8.40-rc desktop-i386.iso as well as the ubuntu-8.40-rc alternate-i386.iso.
I have never used a Linux product before and need all the help I can get. This is my first time asking a question on the web as well. I run into snags as I try an install.
Thank you

Just try it! You'll see that the installer is very friendly and straightforward. And if you do hit a snag, just ask here about that specific problem.

When I try to install it says that the option is to use the whole hard drive. I do not want to write over what I already have on the hard drive. The Partitioning is supposed to be automatic and you are supposed to be able to run 8.04 along side of my Vista O S.

You have two options:

1. I would take the option "manual partitioning" and shrink the vista-partition (ntfs) a bit so that you can make a new ext3 (for / , approx 5 GB or bigger) and a swap partition (as big as your RAM).

2. If you don't want to repartition your drive you can insert the cd, when windows running. The autostart should start the installer automatically and you can choose to install ubuntu like any other windows-program without repartitioning. (with a little slowdown of ubuntu) Ubuntu is then installed into a ubuntu folder on your harddrive.

Have fun!

I tried your first option and it said that it did not recognize the Bios.
I then tried option # 2 and it seemed to install in windows ok, But, I still cannot use Ubuntu? It will not boot up, even after I have reboot the computer. I found a list under my window folders: Ubuntu, disks, boot, grub, install, boot, grub, custom install, hooks, winboot. Some of these folders are empty and the ones that are not, it tells me that windows cannot open. When I go on line to find something to open these files it tells me to contact manufacturer. I checked the disc for errors when I down loaded it and it was error free. Do you have any further items to get this installed the rest of the way, or a way to open and use Ubuntu 8.40 ?

Nothing helped, so in surfing for Ubuntu 8.04 I found the official site of WUBI. They had a download for the new 8.04. I pressed download and it told me That 8.04 was already installed and asked if I wanted to uninstall it. I uninstalled 8.04. I hit the download and a couple of hours later I had 14.6 gigs of Ubuntu loaded into my windows Vista and it automatically rebooted my machine. As it was rebooting a windows boot manager screen appeared and asked which operating system I wanted to use. (It boots up in windows vista and you have to choose Ubuntu with your down arrow. When I did this my installation started automatically, the partitioning was all automatic. When the installation was complete the machine again rebooted automatically. The screen again asked me to choose between Vista and Ubuntu and I again chose Ubuntu. Up popped a Ubuntu 8.04 screen and I played around with it for about an hour. I checked my Yahoo mail account and bought something off of Ebay and paid for it with my Paypal account. Everything worked perfectly. As a matter of fact it even solved a problem of signing in on ebay that I have been having for some time. I thought the problem was with ebay. All in all, I am quite impressed with Ubuntu 8.04 O S . The only thing that will have to get used to rebooting each time I want to change from Vista to Ubuntu or Ubuntu back to Vista. Someone will probably come up with a way that you can do it from the Vista screen and from the Ubuntu screen. If anyone has any ideas on this, let me know. WUBI is definitely the way to go if you want to install the new Ubuntu 8.04. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I am almost 70 years old and do not know all the stuff you young people do. I have had no training and have had to teach myself by the trial and error method. So some of the things you were saying is Greek to me. Thanks. Gene Goon

Switching an running Operating System is sadly not really possible. (You would have to switch the kernels and all the stuff which would be equal to a reboot in lenght)

What you could do is fire up a Vista in Ubuntu with a VirtualMachine like Virtualbox or a Ubuntu in Vista as you like. Because both Operating-Systems have to use your Computer at the same time it will be quite slower than normal...

If you wanna use Windows-Software, you can't replace with Linux-Software, you can try Wine with wine-doors which lets you install and execute exe-Files on native Linux. (nearly without any performance loss) (Lookup on http://appdb.winehq.org/ if your Application can run with Wine or not) (if not ev. try CrossoverOffice or Cedega)

Have fun!

I appreciate the info and will keep it in case I want to try this later. For now I will just reboot. I have to reboot over 2 hundred gigs each time and it only takes me a few minutes. (3-4) Thank you. Gene Goon
