hi andrew sorry your having trouble

you may want to check the top of your screen for a little symbol that is orange and looks like a starburst

add the updates if needed and then go to

application>acessories>and teminal

in the terminal cut and paste in the command you recieved before

with this word added

sudo dpkg --configure -a

when it asks for your pass word use your log in prompt you wont see it
and hit enter

if your still having trouble add to your thread if this works please close it out

Andrew,

The bittorrent client which comes preinstalled with the new Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy is called Transmission. It can be found under Applications > Internet. Azureus is another popular client which you can install on your own, but it is more resource-intensive.

Use Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) to install Sun Java 6.

Open it up (it will ask for your password after you click on it).

Click Search

Type Java 6

Click Search

Scroll to the bottom

Select sun-java6-plugin

(it will automatically select everything else that you need)

But it will leave off the sun-java6-doc (which is causing your problem).

Now click the Apply button.

That will install a bare bones Java environment needed to run Java applications.

The reason your getting your error (if you read it closely) is because the Documentation isn't distributed with Java and you are required to download the file separately to the /tmp directory and then change the ownership of the file to root:root and then press Enter in the installation application to proceed.

Most people don't see this and those that do often don't understand the instructions (it is STUPID that Java has this hang-up, it just hurts its adoption, but that's another story).

Anyway. that should fix you up.

Hopefully your torrenting legal stuff. Good luck.
