Software 3.20.1 does not list an app (Nano) installed to my system

Asked by Alberto

Hello Techies,
another problem with Software 3.20.1, which I begin not to trust in.
(Software 3.20.1 came with the OS, Xubuntu 16.04 LTS)

Moved by curiosity I was looking for Vim and Nano, as I wanted to modify a text file via CLI.
My question was:
is one of them or are both installed to my system?

The solution was:
I launched Software 3.20.1 and clicked 'Installed' button. Vim was listed, Nano was not.
In order to install it, I went back to 'All' and, despite being difficult typing a word in the dash box (Q295907), I made it and the result was: No Application Found.

Feeling like a detective I launched my friend Ubuntu Software Center 15.12 (a great app indeed!) and realised that both, Vim and Nano, are installed. Glad!

(I wonder how I can keep on trusting in Software 3.20.1 as its result is false, even if the search is not dealing with phased updates.)

Why does this happen?

I carry on keeping an eye on my system, as Manfred wisely suggested to me weeks ago...

Many thanks for your attention

Nano is part of the default install.

If you run:

apt-cache policy nano

What is the output, please?

Hello Andrew,
I'm sorry! Yesterday when I wrote the question I forgot to state the most important thing:

both Vim and Nano are installed to my system. No problems at all!

(Following tha result you asked for:
nano:
  Installed: 2.5.3-2
  Candidate: 2.5.3-2
  Version table:
 *** 2.5.3-2 500
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.csg.uzh.ch/ubuntu xenial/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

By the way I used Nano to edit RootSudoTimeout... It works)

WHAT I'd like to understand is if Software 3.20.1 is trustable, as it behaves as I described above.
And how to fix it, if possible.
I still have a penchant for Ubuntu Software Center 15.12 and feel suspicious about Software 3.20.1.

Thanks!

Andrew Woodhead666, this is Alberto... Hello!
do you think removing Software 3.20.1 and re-installing it could be a good idea to fix this and maybe other problems?
I don't have any other idea, so far...
Over...

Hello Andrew,
a bit of update.
I've made a test: I've launched a Live session (Xubuntu 16.04 LTS) and Software 3.20.1. I've looked for Nano but it wasn't listed. But it IS on the DVD, I did use it...
I can't say about Vim... To me it's not on the DVD...
Thanks and bye
