Nothing did  help.

I downloaded from my main 14.04 laptop the lsb-core alongwith the lsb-invalid and lsb-security trasferred them to the 16.04 and installed them and then installed the google-earth 64bit.It was accepted and shown OK in synaptic but opening it it  showed a two seconds glimpse before desappearing. Everything was purged and proceeded to the packages.debian.org site and downloaded the latest versions of core, invalid, security but the result is the same.

As google earth is a must for me I have returned all laptops to 16.04 and hope that in the two remaining years of 16.04 life there will be a solution. Thanks for the assistance

( I assume you mistyped the version number and wanted to say "... I have returned all laptops to 14.04 ..."
Ubuntu 14.04.1 has almost three years of support remaining.

Correct and the correction requires the heading as well to 16.04. Sorry

Never mind. You can correct the error in the title by editing it on https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/292923/+edit

If you do not expect any further answer, you might set the status of this question document to "solved" (even although you did not find a solution, but only a workaround).
