Full system hang on any *buntu distro in a Chromebox (Celeron Haswell)

Asked by Ronnie Burgos

Hello, its been a while that I've been experiencing this annoying issue. I've asked in many places thinking it was firmware/software related but i am now considering hardware.
NOTE: I DO NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE (FULL SYSTEM HANG) ON WINDOWS, IT HAPPENS ONLY IN LINUX.
My hardware is an Asus Chromebox (Celeron Haswell) and a Sony Bravia TV (My TV was purchased last year 2015 and have connected other devices to it even using same HDMI cable I use with my Chromebox without any issue).
My setup: Asus Chromebox connected directly to TV with Amazon basics HDMI cable.

0. The system hang/freeze its random but I can easily replicate it by watching a video from any source, eventually the video/image will freeze but audio continue in a loop. I have to force shutdown the box as nothing (mouse, keyboard) respons.
1. I've tried firmware downgrade/upgrade, none else in official Kodi thread support of this box has this same issue.
2. I've ran tests for RAM and SSD using 2 PMagic versions (latest) and both ram and ssd passed the tests.
3. I have 2 ram sticks 1x2gb +1x4gb for total of 6gb, the 4gb one is new and made sure I bought the correct one for compatibility. I've tested with each stick and with both connected and same issue, so confirmed its not ram issue.
4. I've installed different *buntu distros and based on them distros to ssd but also tested live USB thumb drives and even booting .iso images from my Android Smartphone but with all of them have the same full system hang issue so confirmed its not ssd issue. Unfortunately haven't tested other non *buntu distros as I need that one installed for different reasons, one being Kodi.
5. I've tested 2 keyboards (wired and wireless), nothing plugged into the box at all but HDMI cable and WiFi intead of Ethernet. Nothing works I still get full system hang issue.
6. I do have a handshaking issue though and when I slightly start moving my HDMI cable from the head (Chromebox port side) then the image on my Sony TV start flickering.
This handshaking issue happens mostly on windows but is very mild and its NOT often, thanks to a position mod of the box. In Linux I rarely see it.

I ran out of ideas of what to try next. I just want to find the source of the problem to see if I can have it fixed but also want to know WHY, WHY this is only happening with Linux and not Windows.
BTW right now I'm running Windows 10 off an external HDD as chromebox's SSD is only 16gb (I had it installed but In the end i needed more space) and official Ubuntu 16.04 LTS release installed in internal SSD.

Thanks in advance for any idea, help you can give.

Have you tried a non-Ubuntu based distribution like OpenSuse to test?

Hi, as I mentioned unfortunately no I haven't because I need Ubuntu based
distro for different reasons, one being Kodi (EGL build), etc.
I have tested Ubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu, GalliumOS, Kodibuntu and even
OpenElec, in all same issue.

Ubuntu server used to work, I had it as a headless server for a while but then when I installed openbox and Kodi and started watching videos it froze, again video freezes but audio is in a loop and force shutdown is needed, tried many times.
Probably X has something to do because as a 14.04 headless server my Chromebox ran fine, that was long ago though so I don't know if it would work the same as of now.
I need a full PC now.

Wait, I just remember that when running as headless server the box wasn't connected to TV at all, i accessed to it via ssh only so HDMI port might have something to do aswell.

I'll try wireless display to my TV (if I find out how to do it) ,disconnect HDMI cable and start a playlist in youtube.com to see how that goes. Will report back.
