Continious problems with Ubuntu 6.06 and...

Asked by Alexander F.

I have been using Unbuntu 6.60 since August 1, 2007. You might wonder why I am still using 6.60. Well, that was one of my first problems. I have been unable to up grade to 6.10, 7.04 and 7.10 so I gave up on upgrading. Over the months there were problems upon problems which caused frustration and anger but I didn’t give up on Unbuntu because my on line experience was basically virus and spy wear free which made me very happy. I now have to make a decision, virus and spy wear frustrations using Windows, or the frustration of programs not working on Unbuntu. I often wonder if the constant problems I have on Unbuntu might be a virus issue because they act just like the virus problems I had on Windows. Programs that I have been using on a regular base just stop working. Here are some of the problems I am having on Unbuntu: The screen saver works one day and not the next. Sometimes the screen just goes black and sometimes it has turned off my monitor. My screen saver is set to turn on in 30 minutes and the power shut off is set to do nothing. It doesn’t matter what my personal settings are, it just seems like something else is controlling my computer. The Xsane scanner no longer produces an image and recording files to a CD, for get it, it doesn’t work anymore. If I put the computer in hibernate, I can't bring it back, I have to shut the computer down manually and then reboot. Should I go back to Windows or what? What? Why are these things happening?
Is it possable to uninstall 6.60 and install the latest Unbuntu? I have a 7.04 CD and I installed it but when I clicked the icon, it said this file does not exist and I can't find it in the program manager or anwhere else.

 Alex…

Thanks for responding. Let me give you some more information and maybe
we can figure this out. The first Unbuntu 6.60 was installed on a new
and clean hard drive. It froze up the first time I tried to update it.
I would shut down and try to reboot but it would not boot. I have
Windows XP on the slave hard drive so I went on line and I downloaded
Unbuntu and recorded it on a CD. I then reinstalled Unbuntu on my main
hard drive and it completely erased the first Unbuntu installation. I
then was able to open Unbuntu for the first time. Since then I have
reinstalled Unbuntu 6.0 three more times in hopes to rectify certain
problems which were different problems than I am having now. I ordered
a CD from Unbuntu and they sent me the 7.04 version. I have tried to
install it many times and failed. For some reason, the 6.60 version is
preventing me from installing anything other than 6.60. So, how do I
remove it so I can start with a clean hard drive? I also would like to
install Unbuntu 8.04 so I would have the latest version. What do you think?

Alex.. :-)

to wipe ur main hard drive boot in to ur slave drive (xp)now you should be able to go into my computer and reformat the main drive if this does not work follow this go in to control panel in xp / administration tools/ computer managment/ disc managment/ highlight it / now you will see ur hard drives select the one you wish to clear (reformat) now u should have a clear drive make sure you select the right drive and do not select quick format as it does not work as well hope it works for you
