Keyboard layout switch disappeared from tray

Asked by PM

I have rebooted my 12.04 LTE and cannot see keyboard layout switch in the tray any more. The keyboard shortcut does not work either. Languages were English UK and Russian. How to fix this?

Try using the system-settings - keyboard dialogue

Tried before even writing this question. I cannot even identify "show keyboard layout" checkbox anywhere now.

Sorry, I overlooked that you are running Ubuntu 12.04

Later versions have a checkbox "Show current input source in the menu bar" in the configuration dialogue that I reach via
System settings - Keyboard - Text Entry

In Ubuntu 12.04 the indicator should be shown when you have more than one keyboard layout activated, and will disappear when only one keyboard layout is defined on your system.

Please check whether you still have two keyboard layouts activated.

I do not see any text entry in there.

And yes, I have two layouts - English-UK and Russian.

If you add another layout, do you get the indicator shown?

http://www.webdesignblog.asia/operating-systems/linux-os/keyboard-language-switcher-ubuntu-systray/
list some commands that might help:

sudo ibus-daemon -x -r -d

and/or

sudo gconftool --type boolean -s /desktop/ibus/panel/show_icon_on_systray true
sudo gconftool --type boolean -s /desktop/ibus/panel/show true
sudo gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

Thank you for your reply. I tried all of them. None helped. Any more ideas?

Sorry, no more ideas.

Eventually you could consider upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04.

But it was LTS, I do not want to upgrade as usually there will be more bugs

14.04 is LTS as well.

I am not going to switch until 12.04 is supported. I have heard several times that 14.04 is even more fragile.
I look forward to see the solution for 12.04 _LTS_

I have not heard about a similar problem for anybody else.
This is the reason that I assume that this is not a bug in the software, but some error in your settings.
I do not have any further advice.

I am happy to share my settings. Which ones do you need?
