Drive on which ubuntu will install.

Asked by Errol

A friend interested me in Ubuntu, so I managed to create a partition on an external disk and designated it the H-drive. Before that, however, I downloaded Ubuntu to my C-drive. Using Ubuntu advice, I made the H-drive a bootable usb ( I think! I am a layman on computers). Once the "booting" program ran, I found I could boot to either Windows or Ubuntu. I therefore assumed that Ubuntu had been installed. But, when I boot to Ubuntu I get an icon "Install Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS. I am now unsure about the state of affairs and would like to know how I can install Ubuntu on my external disk, will it install to the H-drive, or how do I instal it without destroying any other program and data files on either the internal or external disks. Please use laymen terms to help.

Did you use Unetbootin to put the installer on your H:

Is the H: on your internal storage or is it a USB storage?

In answer to your questions, I can unfortunately not remember if I used Unetbootin. Is there some way to check this?
Secondly, the H is on a usb storage. Thanks for reacting.

As long as you used an application.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

I did use an application. Looking at the files on H I see the tite of 2 text files is "Uni-Usb-Installer" and the application is "wubi". The ubuntu file at present is on my C drive (internal disk). I have an Acer Aspire laptop.

Reading up on "MD5" I see it is a test to check that a file was received intact - no I did not do such a test. Are there programs for that, and di I do it on the ubuntu "download"

Sorry for the time lapse, but was busy.
