did you install the virtual drivers for your virtual PC?
Later did you check that all media repos are properly working and non-free plugins are installed?

I was not aware of virtual drivers, I installed MS Virtual PC 2007 using all
of the defaults. To install Ubuntu required some changes to grub
menu.lstfile and X11's
xorg.conf file. After running Ubuntu in MS Virtual PC I could not get any
audio. I then went to VPC and enabled the sound and audio check boxes. This
is just a guess but while Ubuntu was installing it might not of found the
virtual sound card because those options were not selected during the
install. Maybe the Ubuntu installer did not install drivers. However, I have
Windows 98 installed without problems.....

Your sound chip should have been detected automatically. You could look in System>Preferences and click on Sound, and see what device is listed there, or right click on the sound icon on your panel. Another thing you could do is open a terminal and type:

alsamixer

... which should give you volume controls for your sound device. Check the volume levels there. The screen that comes out should list your sound chip and several volume levels you can change.
Yet another thing you could do, or to check if your sound chip is being detected, is to run the following in a terminal:

sudo asoundconf list

This will list all your sound devices. If you have more than one, or just want to make sure that Ubuntu is using it, type the following:

sudo asoundconf set-default-card <name of card>

... replace <name of card> with your device's identifier from the above list comman

The System>Preferences has no sound devices listed.

In terminal:
alsamixer returns not found
sudo asoundconf list also return nothing, however entering sudo asoundconf
without list does return a list of commands.

I also installed Ubuntu on another machine under Virtual PC 2008 and I have
the exact same problem.

Also in the terminal when I type su and enter my pass word I can't operate
as root -- I guess ubuntu doesn't allow su command or I don't know the root
pass word.

hello,
Go to Applications ----> System tools ---> Innotek VirtualBox
click Innotek VirtualBox and virtualbox main page will appear.
One click on any virtual machine that you want to run.( do not start that machine )
and now you can see detail for that machine ( GENERAL,HARD DISK,CD/DVD ROM,FLOPPY,AUDIO )
click on audio and Audio page will appear.
click on "Enable Audio box" to enable it.
now you can click on Host "Audio Driver"
choose "Alsa Audio Driver" if you running virtualbox from Linux host and want to run windows virtual machine.
choose "Null Audio Driver" if you running virtualbox from Linux host and want to run linux virtual machine.
choose "Oss Audio Driver" if you running virtualbox from Windows host..
hope this help...

I have tried Ubuntu on two compters both under MS Virtual PC 2007 and in both cases I have not been able to get sound (audio) to work.
I have also tried another Linux distro (slax) on the two computers under MS Virtual PC 2007 with the same results, no sound.
I have downloaded and installed VirtualBox OSE and I have run both Ubuntu and slax on two computers and have been able to get the sound to work. At this point I will assume for the time being that there is no easy or know solution with MS Virtual PC 2007 running Ubuntu with sound. I will use VirtualBox which provides me with what I want. So in a round about way the problem is solved by using VirtualBox vs MS Virtual PC 2007. Thanks to Bharadwaj Jay and Naufal......

I am getting the same sound problem under MS Virtual PC 2007. Do you have SP1 for VPC 2007? Its a free download from the Microsoft website. I do, but I still have the same problem. Maybe somebody should report the problem to Microsoft. I'll take the honors of doing so. Good luck and God bless you!
