Google Play movies will not play in either Firefox or Chrome

Asked by Patrick

In both Firefox and Chrome, any movie or tv show I try to play from Google Play doesn't work. I am running Ubuntu 14.04. The error I get says:

Video Playback Error

I know nothing about Google Play movies. When something, I don't know anything about, shows up, I look it up. Something caught my eye, may or may not help.
Have you installed Ubuntu HAL? From site below.

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html

You can find it in Ubuntu Software Center. (Hardware Abstraction Layer)
If you have already done this, please ignore.

I have HAL installed. Also, I think Chrome uses HTML5 for playing movies instead of flash.

Also, Youtube videos work fine in both browsers.

My Fedora desktop will play Google Play movies and so will my Android devices. I have also tried playing movies on my laptop both on my home wifi and my work ethernet.

I am seeing the same (or very similar) issue on Ubuntu 15.10. When I try to play video on Google Play in Chromium, I get:

The server cannot accept the root certificate used in communication. Please try again later.
Show details
Component gls
Error Code 125
Message
Attributes {"dc":5000,"statusMessage":"BAD_REQUEST","headers":{"Server":"AVLS/2.0","Encrypted-Devman-Device-Id":"5iUA4Ft8z3aaQZpJYlNr_hAAAAD13A8ljULzdqt-_4-CHlDl"},"body":{}}

However, the error is different on Firefox: It directs me to the Chrome extension/app for Google Play Movies & TV (awkward).

Installing this app on Chromium does not help, as "launching" the app simply opens the Google Play Movies & TV website in a tab, upon which the same error as before happens.

Google forums have a couple posts marginally related to this, but they are for Android or Chromecast issues, and don't seem to be making any headway:

With Ubuntu 15.10 google play trailers sometimes works with crome and firefox (works good on android phone). But ordered movies can be watched on www.youtube.com/purchases and works on crome and firefox like regular youtube video (but could not lunch on older LG smart tv youtube app).
P.S. I instaled HAL ( http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/10/fixing-amazon-prime-streaming-drm-protected-flash-13-10 )
