big problem with resolution and redering

Asked by viktor133

hi all,

running ubuntu 14.04 on a toshiba with nvidia graphics card.

i recently tried to run an older game (alpha centauri). given up trying to run it. but now my resolution is broken every time i boot up.
it's difficult to explain exactly what happens. the task bar up seems fine.
the launcher doesn't work properly and starts flickering.
my mouse clicks don't seem to be registered where i click.
the screen (wallpaper and icons on it) have shifted to the left.
also, i need to input my password for my keyring every time which i didn't need to before.

this command which i found somewhere on the net:

viktor@viktor-SATELLITE-L750:~$ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1366x768
warning: output VGA1 not found; ignoring

solves the problem, but only till next time i start up my laptop. I'm not sure what it does, very minimal skill with cli.

thanks for any help

actionparsnip, kindly don't reply

You are using 1366 x 768. Is this not normal for you?

The set resolution is what i normally use. But still have the problems
mentioned that severely impair the use of the GUI. Which i explained
in the original question.
Although i don't seem to be asked for the password to my keyring anymore.

Are you using this in WINE? So, when you exit WINE, the resolution goes to pot.

Is this right?

the problem occured first when i was trying to load this game i was
talking about. there's a linux version and a windows version. i tried
to run both, the latter with wine.

However, the game i trew of my hard drive. The problem persists every
time i start up my laptop.
