Software Updater failed to download repository information

Without warning after about a year of use of Ubuntu 14.04, my software updater is not working; I only noticed this when Firefox started getting buggy and hanging.
I have tried manually updating, but got the messages:
"Checking for updates", "Loading software list", "Searching gb.archive.ubuntu.com" then "Failed to download repository information" and "Check your internet connection".

My internet connection works fine with Firefox and Chrome, so I changed software updater to a different site, mirror.sov.uk.goscombe.net. and used sudo apt-get upgrades in Terminal. This downloaded lots of information, but after rebooting and manually updating, I get the same error message, except for "Searching mirror.sov.uk.goscombe.net".
I was hoping for "The software is up to date" and for this process to happen automatically. Any ideas on how to get there?

Hello Mark
Switching to Main Server caused a big update to happen. After restarting software updater gave the usual error message "Failed to download repository information" and then seconds later "Software is up to date". I don't know if the problem is solved. Here is the terminal output:

Terminal output looks OK.

The mirror site mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net was probably just experiencing (temporary) issues, which has nothing to do with your Ubuntu install. Or you mistyped goscomb in mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net . Or both issues at the same time.

You wrote

mirror.sov.uk.goscombe.net

but it should actually be

mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net

Maybe there was a typing mistake when you set up Ubuntu to use mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net ??

You may want to remove some of the old kernels which will free up a tonne of room for you.

Hello Mark,
I'm glad you think everything is OK.
No I didn't type anything when selecting mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net on the drop-down menu from "Other sites". Well spotted!
It's still a mystery what went wrong, so I suggest leaving this question open a few days and seeing if the automatic updating actually happens, which I assume it will.
Thanks so much for your help.
One last question - should I leave the updater downloading from "Main Site"?

I recommend sticking to "Main site" to see if the root cause of this issue is strictly related to mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net or not.
