CD drive not woking

Asked by wordsmyth2

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Acer Aspire E1-531 and my CD drive has stopped working. The icon doesn't show in the Launcher but does when I look in DISKS. And when I boot up I get an error message saying "drive failed to mount" along with the S or M choice. It was working okay until the recent update - which has become a constant problem for me with 14.04. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Please provide the full text of any error message. Just telling "I get an error message" or giving half of the text does not give us enough information to provide help.

Are there any messages about the CD drive in the system logs?

Error message gives drive number of the CD player and the following
    message:

"Failed to mount drive. Press S for SKIP and M for manual recovery"
When I press S the computer resumes boot.
When I press M I get a message saying" A maintenance shell is being
set up... Press Control D and the system will restart and check files.

If I then press M I'm in the terminal - and nothing happens, except
for a cursor blinking on and off - waiting for text entry? No
messages re CD drive in system log, only the following error
message:/var/log/mail.log Error when getting information for
file '/var/log/mail.log': No such file or directory

    I trust this is helpful
    Many thanks for your response.

What is the difference between this question and https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/269721 ?

In the other question three weeks ago I recommended commenting out the line that refers to the CD/DVD drive, but now I see the same line in your /etc/fstab file.

Hi Manfred: Thanks for your help, but I give up. I've used Ubuntu
from 8.04 through to the current release, all LTS, and rarely
experienced a problem. But since installing 14.04 I've been plagued
with difficulties, often requiring a re-installation - with no
improvement. And it's still happening. So I'm re-installing reliable
12.04. If that doesn't fix things - 12.04 was the best ever release
    - then it must be a mis-match with the Acer or whatever. Thanks
again for your help and patience.
