Hi,
i've find my way out of this kind of problem wirh my ac'97 chip. Open "Volume control" in gnome and goto "edit" "preference". Then, click on "External Amplifier". At the end, you will be able to enable External Amplifier in the "Switches" tab in gnome volume manager. It work for me ...

This worked great! Thanks guys. There was just a little bit of confusion. I had some trouble because once External Amplifier is added, you need to go to the tab and uncheck it."

I also tried
sudo nano /etc/modprobe. d/alsa- base
and changed it to
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack "or" 5stacks digout but not working as well

I have googled... no answer helped.
I even downloaded driver from realtek for linux but still not working...
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

someone can help?
tks in advance

I also had problems with my sound card (Creative 2) on ubuntu 7.10. I've tried a lot of solutions but I couldn't solve the problem. I tried ubuntu 8.04 alpha 6 and it works perfect, I have no problems with my sound card. If you have a fast internet connection you could try ubuntu 8.04 alpha 6 livecd.
