vodafone 3g using dlink does not connect lubuntu 14.04

i click on the nm icon to start vodafone and it doesnt connect. i am currently using bsnl but the service is terrible so i want to switch. i havent done anything because i cant find any suggestions on what to do to make it work. i am trying to work with vodafone rep but he doesnt know linux.

also i am a victim of bug 1438003, not sure if that is relevant.

d-Link connects to bsnl network from hcl desktop running Ubuntu OS.
d-Link does not connect to vodafone network from hcl desktop running Ubuntu OS

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

(obviously with the Vodafone dangle in)

the link you provide does not address the issue i have. this link is about getting d-link to switch from storage mode but i had to research that problem when i bought it and it is solved.

the device works with another carrier but not with vodafone.
