on booting key is not unlocking, ubuntu 14.04 hangs

Asked by Capt Pandit

I was working on Ubuntu 14.04 OS and left the desktop for just a few minutes and it just hanged. It didn't take the password to open. Even on restart it didn't take the password to open the key lock.
I am presently using Windows 7 part of my PC to post this Question ?
 Please help

If you use commands prefixed with sudo, does the password work OK (try just hitting ENTER when asked for your credential)

After Booting, the Ubuntu screen comes up and freezes. It just doesn't take any command, click or Enter command. I have to shut the PC and start again to log on to the Windows 7 OS to use the desktop.

Please clearly describe what the problem with your system is.

"key is not unlocking" does not provide enough information on what happens (or does not happen) at what moment.

After booting the Ubuntu window comes up and freezes. It doesn't take my password to open the key. It doesn't take any command what so ever. You asked me last time whether i can boot into Ubuntu Recovery Mode? Yes, i can. I can give you more info if required. Thanks

What "key" are you talking about that you want to open?

By "Key", i mean " entering password to open the user account ".
However, i may mention here again that after booting the Ubuntu 14.04 screen comes up and it gives choice to choose Ubuntu, Advance Mode etc. or Windows 7. When i choose Ubuntu, password window pops and there after, there is no cursur nor it takes any command or Enter Click as well.

Ok, it now gets clearer to me.

The screen with the selection Ubuntu, Advance Mode etc. or Windows 7 in fact is the grub boot loader's selection screen.
if you select 'Advance Mode' and in the next screen select an older kernel, does it work?

If you select 'Ubuntu' and end up at the screen that does not accept any input, does the mouse cursor move around when you move your mouse?

If you press ctrl-alt-F1 on that screen, do you get a terminal-like login screen?
Can you enter your username, press enter, and enter your password to log in (you reboot from that mode by entering the command "sudo reboot")?

- After i select " Advance Mode" the screen shows only Linux advance mode etc. When i chose one of them it shows a white screen showing various slections, such as Normal Boot, safe mode etc. But i am not able to select any as my cursur doen't show.

- On selecting Ubuntu the screen doesn't accept any input and there is no Mouse Cursur showing on

-On pressing ctrl-alt-F1 on that screen, nothing happens.

- I can't enter my PW to log in, even at the reboot stage as well.

Can you test another keyboard?

A new installation might help in any case.

The keyboard is ok and working while working on Windows 7.
Shall I reinstall Ubuntu 14.04?

I want to recommend that before doing a re-installation you should test Ubuntu by booting into the installation kit and selecting "Try Ubuntu without installing".

Do you have an installation DVD for Ubuntu or a bootable USB stick prepared for that purpose?

If yes, put it into your computer, reboot, and during the boot process instruct the BIOS to boot from that device. (You will have to press e certain key early during the boot process, usually it is shown on screen for a short moment.)

Mr Manfred,
I have the bootable USB stick. I un-installed Ubuntu 14.04 from the control panel of Wndows 7 OS and installed Ubuntu 14.04 with the USB.
Both the OS's are working fine.
Thanks for the valuable advice.
God bless
