Problem connecting Lumia 930 phone to Ubuntu 14.10

Asked by Harri Ojanen

Hello,

I'm having problems connecting my Lumia 930 phone (Windows phone 8.1) to Ubuntu Gnome 14.10. When plugging the USB cable, the device shows up on the desktop (there is a camera icon with the name of the phone), so it seems to be detected correctly. Also there is a pop-up asking if I want to run Shotwell. Shotwell gives an error "could not claim the USB device (-53)". Alternatively if I open the desktop icon by double-clicking it, it just opens an empty folder with nothing inside it.

I have also access to Xubuntu 14.04. The phone works fine with that. Double clicking it's icon displays the folder structure inside the phone and I can access my files on the phone.

Any advice how to get the phone working with Ubuntu 14.10. Where to start troubleshooting?

Harri

Do you use the safe removal feature in your OS before you unplug the phone?

Here is some information from the Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 system, where the connection to the camera does not work (phone contents are not displayed):

harri@lumi:~$ lsusb
...
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 0421:06fc Nokia Mobile Phones
...

harri@lumi:~$ gphoto2 --auto-detect
Malli Portti
----------------------------------------------------------
USB PTP Class Camera usb:001,009

Before mounting:

harri@lumi:~$ gvfs-mount -l
Drive(0): ST9500325ASG
...
Volume(0): Lumia 930 (RM-1045)
  Type: GProxyVolume (GProxyVolumeMonitorGPhoto2)

And after mounting the phone:

harri@lumi:~$ gvfs-mount -l
Drive(0): ST9500325ASG
...
Volume(0): Lumia 930 (RM-1045)
  Type: GProxyVolume (GProxyVolumeMonitorGPhoto2)
  Mount(0): Lumia 930 (RM-1045) -> gphoto2://[usb:001,009]/
    Type: GProxyShadowMount (GProxyVolumeMonitorGPhoto2)
Mount(1): Lumia 930 (RM-1045) -> gphoto2://[usb:001,009]/
  Type: GDaemonMount
harri@lumi:~$

harri@lumi:~$ gphoto2 -v
...
This version of gphoto2 is using the following software versions and options:
gphoto2 2.5.4 gcc, popt(m), exif, cdk, aa, jpeg, readline
libgphoto2 2.5.4 all camlibs, gcc, ltdl, EXIF
libgphoto2_port 0.10.0 gcc, ltdl, no USB, serial without locking

On Xubuntu 14.04 the phone contents are displayed correctly, but the output from the above commands is basically identical, except for the versions, gphoto2 and the other libraries are slightly older.

There is a bug on the tracker for gphoto2, which seems to be related:

http://sourceforge.net/p/gphoto/bugs/975/

It is originally about another problem, but at the end they discuss this same issue. Looks like the problem shows up with this specific version 2.5.4 of gphoto2 and Lumia phones, and it is fixed in later versions of gphoto2.

I compiled version 2.5.6 of gphoto2 and libgphoto2, and now my phone works with Ubuntu 14.10 also.

If mukesh has the same problem with 15.10, perhaps gphoto2 is the same unfortunate version 2.5.4 also there?

It's a bug in ubuntu (in one of the libraries the OS uses) , I think there is no easy way to fix it yourself, unless you know how to compile and install a new version of the affected library. I filed a bug report about it, let's see how soon they can make a fix for it.

You can follow the bug here:
