Installing Steam on Ubuntu 15.04 fails repeatedly

Asked by runner1956-5150-60

I have tried to use the Software Center and the Terminal in my attempts to re-install Steam on my computer after an upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04 was offered from Ubuntu 14.10 and I accepted and allowed 15.04 to install.

Steam quit working immediately after so I tried to remove Steam and then reinstall it.

The Software Center installs Steam Launcher ... but then nothing happens, no icon ... no program ... no access to Steam ... and when I search for apps on my computer the Steam icon is in there but says:

Installed on - none.

When I try to use the Terminal I get the following:
    <username>:~$ steam
Running Steam on ubuntu 15.04 64-bit
    STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1428965940)

    libGL error driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: nouveau
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: fialed to load driver: swrast

I have tried asking Steam support for information on this problem and

Install the Nvidia driver using the additional drivers application

Did the install you suggested, and after rebooting my computer (twice)
Ubuntu 15.04 login screen showed & asked for my password.

Entered my user password and got an 'incorrect password' message.

Tried entering my administrator password and Ubuntu 15.04 seems to accept
the password, starts to open the desktop and then reverts / switches back
to the login screen.
What step might be next???

Which of the NVIDIA drivers?

There is a list of 5 different ones, including the X one that comes with 15.04;

and every one I have installed results in the login problem I mentioned already.

I've gotten the desktop to work by using:

    sudo apt-get remove NIVIDA.*

and rebooting the computer.

But I'm back to the original problem now, Steam Launcher just will not install Steam on Ubuntu 15.04 and to add to the problem all the games I had paid for have disappeared as well.
