Please provide the output of the following diagnostic commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo lshw -C display
lspci
dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

I assume that this is one of the hybrid systems with two graphic cards. These need extra packages like NVidia-prime or bumblebee to activate the NVidia graphics on demand, see also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/HybridGraphics

I see in synaptic nvidia prime is installed, but bumblebee is not, but
there are nodrivers there for the GT 740 card.
I have another drive installed on the same machine running Ubuntu 15.04
Ver. & that is no problem it has got it all, & runs well I am quite
pleased with it, no problems so far .

"configuration: driver=nvidia"

You have already a dedicated nvidia driver installed. If you run the nvidia config program, you should see details.

Can you help with this problem?
