Orange Switzerland USB GlobeSurfer iCON 7.2 Modem

Asked by SPB

Just got this modem. In Hardware Information in Gutsy Gibbon It is seen as "Globetrotter HSDPA Modem" - would like to get it working
with Ubuntu. Have not enough experience to do this so I need some help.

It is recognised as a serial device /dev/tty/USB0

and looking at the screenshot of the Hardware device it says:-

serial physical_device string /org/freedesktop/Ha/devices/usb_device_af0_6901_Serial_Number_ifo

So Ubuntu is seeing it attached.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks for this link, I firstly ran this on my aging PowerMac desktop where of xourse it worked first time and then on my Ubuntu laptop (Dell Inspiron) did steps 1 - 5 before, then was not sure and went to step 12. So now I think best is I restart from scratch. I did not understand whether to continue to point 6 and onwards or go to point 12.

You can see the hardware info at:-

SPB,

Have you tried using the Modem Connection in System > Administration > Network?
Enable the Modem Connection, set the modem to /dev/ttyUSB0

you can't use this modem directly as a modem because when you plug this modem to your Ubuntu, it works as a Mass Storage and try to install the software directly in your Ubuntu.
My link above will tell you how to use directly the device as a modem instead of mass storage for the first time.
Anyway .. i got the source code from the google (sorry .. i'm forget the source link) and try to use it and it works.

There's a new solution now:

Please try this if you are using Ubuntu 8.10 or Ubuntu 9.04:
