I need MathJax, which uses Java, to work withFirefox

Asked by Saul Lubkin

I use WebWork, an on-line homework system, with my math classes (at the Univ. of Rochester, Rochester, NY). To render mathematical formulae in the homework problems, an interpreter called MathJax is used. MathJax uses java to to render the mathematical formulae.

This is akk working perfectly, when I use Google Chrome -- but not when I use Ubuntu Firefox (my default browser). Each piece of math code is rendered as "[Math]".

Help greatly appreciated.

Thansk,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

Use TAB and ENTER to accept the license. You will then have Oracle Java in your browsers once you close them all and rerun it.

Dear actionparsnip,

I did just as you suggested -- but there was no improvement. While running
the on-line homework system webwork under firefox, mathematical formulae
are not interpreted (these formulae are written in the java scripting
language MathJax. Google chrome has no such problem -- the formulae are
correctly rendered).

I successfully downloaded seamonkey; but the browser in seramonkey has the
same problem as firefox; it does not interpret MathJax data appropriately,
making it impossible to use with Webwork (a web-based computer homework
system invented by, and used by, the University of Rochester Math Dept.

Help greatly appreciated.

I have installed the latest version of Oracle Java, which is avaiable as
/usr/bin/jave.

All other browsers that I've tested (Google chrome, Opera) work fine with
Webwork, interpreting the mathjax data correctly.

I suspect that I have to copy the java plugin into the appropriate
subdirectory of ~/.mozilla/firefox/ for firefox to make proper use of java
-- but I don't know where to look for this plugin (I beleive it is some
place on my computer, having been put there by Java when I installed the
latest Oracle Java.) Also, I don't know what subdirecory of
~/.mozilla/firefox/ should be used (in which to place the plugin).

Help much appreciated.

Thanks,

i've solved my problem!

It was very easy -- I clicked on the "Menu" button in Firefox, chose
"Add-Ons", then "Plugins". The Preferences for the Java applet was "Ask".
I changed it to "Always allow" -- and voila, the problem disappeared!
