MacBookPro6,2 touchpad click stopped working (14.04.2 LTS)

Asked by Derek Kwan

I've been running Ubuntu Studio (so my DE is Xfce) on my MBP smoothly for about a month but recently the touchpad click has stopped working. The touchpad still physically clicks (and the battery isn't swollen) andit is still able to move the cursor around the screen, but all my clicking abilities have disappeared (even in the login screen) so I've had to plug in an external mouse (but I'd really like not to have to). I've recently installed the latest Ubuntu Studio updates. I'm currently running the 14.04.2LTS on the 3.13.0-46-lowlatency kernel. I've already tried disabling ignoring duplicates in the /usr/share/X11/x.org.cond.f/50-synaptics.conf file.

Here are my relevant logs from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

If you make a new Ubuntu user then log off and login as that is it OK?

Hello,

I've just tried making another account, restarting and logging into that
one. Unfortunately, it does not appear to restore my clicking ability
(the clicking ability doesn't even work when I'm at the login screen.
All I can do logged in or out is move the mouse with the touchpad). I
checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log while in the new test account and
grep'ed for bcm and the entries look similar if not exact to the ones
I've posted earlier.

Does it work in the Ubuntu live CD desktop?

Actually, it kind of works but very sporadically and seemingly only at
the very bottom of the touchpad after several clicks. I suppose this is
more telling of a hardware problem than a software problem? Seems weird
that I'd still have physical click and cursor movement but no actual
registered clicks.
