os to old to use. can't download from repository,codes no longer reconized

os 12.1? i think, is so outdated i can not upgrade anything from the repository . system using old codes not supported now. i was using a different os but tried upgradig to the latest and it ate my system tore it to shreds so found this os in old stake of cds and am hobbling along cannot burn cds,backends missing. im stuck. terminal will not fetch it asks for passwords but will not accept any input of the password. ive downloaded kali linux but can not burn to disc for install. can i install from downloads my email address is <email address hidden>, or <email address hidden>. i am very illiturate when it comes to computers but am trying to learn. please help. again i can download but cannot install

I suggest you wipe whatever you have installed and do a clean install of Trusty. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019
